Formula Feeders.. If you premix

For some reason the formula isnt mixing very well and leaving chunks.. this actually just started happening. We try not to shake the bottle too much to avoid bubbles and foam, we like swirl them but like i said lately it hasnt been working. Maybe its the amount of formula.. i dont know... but anyways I'm thinking im going to start premixing the formula for the day and keeping it in the fridge to make sure its all mixed up and all the bubbles and foam has time to settle. My question is...for those of you that premix do you take premixed bottles with you in like a bag with an ice pack, or can they go from fridge to room temp? DD will take room temp bottles but i dont think she will like them cold... Or do you just bring the powder and bottles of water and mix as you need them?

Thanks =]

Re: Formula Feeders.. If you premix

  • I use ready to feed, but when we switch to powder soon, we are using this: https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3247691

I have heard great things about it for premixing!

  • I make all of LO's formula for the day using this and a whisk.

Once it is all mixed, I pour it into his bottles and store them in the fridge.

  • I 2nd the Dr. Brown's pitcher.  It makes life super easy!
  • 3rd vote for the Dr. Browns pitcher.  Great for making daycare bottles and keeping a pitcher for the day in the fridge.

I use Dr. Brown's formula pitcher and make one batch for the day and pour into bottles as needed.  If we are away from home, I will pour out as many bottles as I need and transport in an insulated bag.  I do not feed DS formula that has been out at room temp for more than 30 mins or so.
This is what I do too. I keep ice packs in my cooler/insulated tote.
  • We premix the formula for the next day.  I use the Dr Browns pitcher and its AWESOME! It truly does stir up all of the clumps.  I then put it in the bottles for the next day.  When leaving, we have a little "lunchbox" and we just toss in a bottle or two, and an icepack".  Works great!   DS likes bottles room temp/warm, too so I just find a microwave wherever we are, or run them under a warm faucet for a few minutes.  Seems to do the trick, and its less time consuming than trying to "mix on the go".

I really do suggest the Dr Brown's pitcher though, it's like $18 but very worth the money!

    GOod luck!

  • The bottles are only good for an hour after they have been mixed/warmed and are unrefridgerated.  I usually don't premix if we are going out.  I just have a bottle with warm water in it and then a travel thing that I put the pre-measured amount of formula needed and mix as we need them.  If I am out longer than I bring more.  Bottles will last 24 hours refrigerated so we premix our bottles for daycare the night before.  Check to make sure the powder has not expired.  They usually do 30 days after you open the can.  That might be why it's not mixing.  I find that the formula mixes better if the water is warmer.
  • My girls drink 60+ ounces of formula a day. So every night and early afternoon I mix up about 32 ounces in a glass batter bowl w/ a wire whisk and cold water. Pour it into containers and stick it into the fridge (32oz rubbermaid pour containers 1.94/ at Walmart. For some reason I can see any clumps much better in a glass container. I've always done this and it works really well. DS would drink cold bottles (preferred them) the girls insist on warm. So when going out I have to have a way to warm things up. I keep the bottles in an insulated bag w/ ice packs. Also bottles can sit out mixed for 2 hours before the formula needs thrown away... so depending on how long your outing is would dictate storage.
  • I use concentrate and make up about 5 bottles at a time. I tried using powder but HATED IT.  I found powder so messy. concentrate is much easier
  • Another happy user of the Dr. Browns pitcher although it's not big enough for me I have to make 2 batches each morning but then I have all the bottles for the day made up and in the fridge.

For warming I just heat water in a kettle then pour in a dish and place the bottles in there to warm.

For travel if your going an long distance or someplace were you can't pop it in a fridge I find a lunch bag and a small ice pack do the trick.
