? for those who thicken formula due to reflux

Is rice cereal helpful? LO is on Prevacid and still spits up very frequently.  Pedi has suggested thickening formula and I was wondering if it has been effective for anyone.

TIA

  • I tried Enfamil AR, which has rice starch in it and it hasn't made a difference. Crying My boys do spit up less on it but their reflux symptoms (screaming, refusing to eat, etc) are still as horrible as ever.

Aw, I'm sorry it isn't helping! The Prevacid does wonders for the reflux symptoms, but she spits up a ton. I can't take her anywhere without 5 changes of clothes and plenty of burp clothes.  I took her to Wal-mart earlier and she spit up all over the floor. Talk about embarrassing.

  • My DD is on Zantac which also works wonders, however she does spit up a lot.  We thicken her formula with rice but she still spits up.  She doesn't seem to mind it though.  Before taking the Zantac she would spit up and be very upset about it- now she smiles at me as the spit up is flowing from her mouth.  I also have to bring a few extra set of clothes and many burp cloths/bibs.

    Good Luck!

  • My daughter has been getting thickened bottles since 2 months. It helps a lot. We don't even try to offer her formula without rice cereal. She's on Prevacid now, which is the biggest help, but rice cereal still helps her with spit-ups and silent reflux.
