Baby Names

Ava and Adah

DH and I were talking today and he thought that one of the names on our list, Adah, was too similar to the popular Ava to use as a first name. What are your thoughts?

Re: Ava and Adah

  • I absolutely love the name Ada... not so sure about the 'h', though. I also like the spelling of Aida. I would probably use it as a nickname for Adelaide (someone mentioned this name earlier on the board).

  • Are you using them together? If so, then yes, they are too similar. IF you are asking if Adah sounds like Adah then no, I don't think they sound alike. I prefer Ada as a NN to Adalyn or Adalaide.

  • I have an Ada, not only is it close to Ava it is also close to Aiden. It doesn't bother me, but I had't really thought about it until going to playgroup and looking up anytime anyone said Aiden. We have a five year old friend who walks around saying " It's Ada not Ava".

  • I really like the name Adah. I think it is spelled with an 'h' in the Bible although I do prefer the spelling Ada. I don't think it's too similar to Ava.

  • I think it's cute and different!
  • I don't think it's too similar, but what about Ada (dropping the H), Adalie, or Adonia.
  • Ada with no "h" is nice. Just not together with Ava. I am not for matchy/matchy names for twins. I also like Adalia, with Ada as a nn.

  • I like Ada (without the "H") except if your last name is a noun. Then it sounds like "Ate a."

     Example:

    Ada Smith- nice
    Ada Sparrow- not so nice

  • I love the name Adah.  It isn't one that is trendy or heard often, I don't associate it with any trend, it is feminine and not made up and is simple but unique enough that she will probably be the only one with her name.  Great choice.

  • Thanks ladies...if we use it will keep Adah as the spelling as it is a family name. I never thought of it being close to Aiden though...hopefully we have at least a couple of weeks to figure it out!

I hope I didn't add to your worries. It was just something I never considered, and thought it might be helpful to you.

I love the name. I wanted an old name and my husband wanted a math name, and Ada was the first one we found that met both criteria.

I think the H makes it more name like and less of an acronym. I may have gone this route if I had given it more thought.

If you love it use it and don't worry about the other stuff.
