**Hooray**

Hey there!  I miss you, too!  All this snow is keeping me inside and going crazy. :)

How is R feeling?

We're thinking of going to Philadelphia for the day tomorrow.  Any child-friendly suggestions?

Happy New Year!

Re: **Hooray**

  • Hey there!  Happy New Year!

Philadelphia tomorrow, as in New Year's Day, right - haa haa - Philly is caaarrraazy on New Years because of the Mummers Parade, but fun!!  mummers.com  or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mummers_Parade  It's definitely a sight to be seen - lots of drunk South Philadelphians, though... but the String Bands are fun for the kids (it will make sense if you look at the website) :)  If you go, let me know and I'll tell you some better places to park (if you're driving)

The parade is all day, all over downtown, so if you do go, plan on being stuck in traffic or using public transportation. If you go, let me know and I'll tell you some better places to park (if you're driving).  Rob was already mourning not getting to go - lol.

As for more child-friendly things, the Please Touch Museum is absolutely amazing (by far the best children's museum I've ever seen).  Not inexpensive, but I did discover that they have great reciprocity with other children's museums, so it's worth looking to see if the museum near you has reciprocity with it - we actually still have a membership with them because we can use it in Philly, but also here at Kidspace, skirball, etc.

https://www.pleasetouchmuseum.org   You could literally spend at least a half-day, eat lunch, and then keep going... it's awesome!

If it wasn't parade day, I'd say another must-see is the Reading Terminal Market downtown (guessing it will be an absolute zoo, though).

The zoo is nice (better than LA's - haa haa); King of Prussia mall is a great place for shopping - it's HUGE.

The art museum steps are fun, too - pretty place to walk around near the river, lots of places to run and play (no play equipment, though).

Gah, so much of what I would recommend is right downtown, right in the middle of the craziness....

  • Oh boy, glad I asked - I didn't know anything about the Mummers parade.  That would have sucked to get stuck in that traffic because C is still awful in the car.  We may have to do it another weekend!

J's main purpose for going is to try philly cheesesteaks at Pat's and Geno's (damn food network - haha!) - are they in the area of the parade?

  • Loading the player...
  • Oh yeah... right in the heart of South Philly, which is the heart and soul of that crazy event!

Oh, and if it's authentic cheesesteaks you're after,  the ones to try are Tony Lukes (it's a little outdoor "shack" of a place, no indoor seating, but the best around)

Yeah, nothing like dining next to the freeway!  It's a true Philly experience, though... then you're super close to Passhunk avenue in South Philly, and Packer Park which is a hilarious Italian row home extravaganza - decorated bay windows like you've never seen before Stick out tongue

Pat and Geno's get a lot of play, but true steak-lovers head elsewhere (they're worth a drive by, though, because they're hilarious to look at from the outside!)

If you did head down tomorrow and wanted to totally avoid the crowd issue, heading to the Please Touch Museum would be a good bet, and there's actually a great deli/pizza place out in that area that has excellent cheesesteaks :)   https://www.dakotapizza.com/index.php

But yeah, if you're not wanting a CRAZY Philly experience, either avoid downtown or head down any time after tomorrow :)

  • Yeah, Tony Luke's looks scenic! :)

Thanks for the tips.  I'm thinking we'll save the craziness for another year.  I'm so glad we didn't blindly stumble into that!

  • Oh, but the stories you could have told.... haaa haa!!  I was so looking forward to seeing photos of you doing the Mummers' strut and singing "Golden Slippers" (trust me... if/when you ever go, these will make sense...)  :)

Off to go clean up from our klassy dinner at In-n-Out.   Nothing says New Years like a Double Double!  :)  (yeah, ear infections all around here... good times!!)
