Breastfeeding

Pumping newbie ?

Hi everyone,

I have a question about pumping....I am not going back to work any time soon so I am only pumping to have some milk for occasional sitter and for my husband to help with some of the feedings. For the most part BF is going well, I just want to be able to leave the house once in awhile and I am not ready yet to feed in public.

Question is-do I feed him on one side and then pump the other side? Afraid he will still be hungry since I normally give him both breasts at each feeding.

When is the best time for me to pump? I heard in the morning but is this after I feed him? Wondering if I would have any left to pump.

I tried to today and got 2 ounces from one breast...was going to save it but he was still hundry so had to give it to him. Since both seemed empty.

Can any one give me some tips on when to pump, what bottle or bags work best. Any advice is much appreciated!!

  • 2 ounces is a normal output, don't worry your breast aren't really 'empty' and if all you need is a few bottles around, I wouldn't recommend trying to pump more than that during a session.  Pumping at night and in the morning is best because your body produces more milk at these times, this usually means you can have trouble pumping in the evenings.

  • I am VERY new at this, so keep that in mind- I'll share what I do...

2 oz is pretty good, from what I hear!

I pump after our 10 a.m. feeding (or 9 a.m., we don't have a real schedule yet). I pump again before bed, after his 10 pm feeding.

I have also pumped an hour after feeding him and have gotten 6 or so oz that way.

I have a double electric and use the little storage bottles that it came with, then freeze in an ice cube tray and transfer 4 cubes into a medela bag for the freezer. HTH!

  • I did the same before I went back to try and build up a little supply and to have some on hand. I usually pumped in the morning after I fed my DS. He rarely nursed on both sides and still doesn't. Then I pumped at night or any time I had a little down time and felt like doing it. GL!

  • Your Breast are never really empty.  Once I pumped 2 hrs after feeding LO b/c I became engorged and I figured I had another hour before he woke up.  Of course as soon as I turned off pump he woke up and was hungry(this was before I was giving him a bottle)  I went ahead and nursed him and he was getting milk.
