Trying to Get Pregnant

How reliable?

How reliable are OPKs?  I had never heard of them before I started looking at this site.  I know quite a few of you use them, but I've also read some posts about how they aren't very reliable.

AF hasn't showed up yet since the removal of my IUD, so I'm taking my time and looking into different options.  If OPK's are reliable, I think I will probably start with that, rather than temping.

 What is your opinion?

Re: How reliable?

  • They are accurate 98% of the time. <-- this is what I am finding on google.

  • I haven't gotten a + yet... But am also very early to the process, so I may not be the most reliable source. :)  Google > Peelester

  • I found them to work. I use the answers brand that comes with 20. I normally start taking them every day from day 10 and get positive ones for 2-3 days before I have the temp spike.

  • I used OPKs the last few cycles with mixed results.  I got a +OPK during the previous 2 cycles, but then this cycle, nothing but -OPK, although I wasn't using this very precisely this time around (wasn't holding my pee for a few hours, took them at all different times of the day, etc...)

My advice is to try them out, but back them up with temping, at least for now.  The other thing about OPKs is that you can get a +, but not always ovulate.  The only way to know if you've ovulated is by observing a temp shift.   Good luck!

  • There are a lot of posts on the last couple pages about OPKs.  If you go back through and read some of them, I bet you will you have some of your answers.

I like them.  Most of the girls here use them and have success, though some do not.

Edited to add: I would use them in conjunction with temping.  OPKs alone can't tell that you have ovulated, only that you might.

  • I've  used them for 2 cycles.  While I find the info helpful and have found them reliable I agree with the previous poster that they can add a level of stress but feeling more worried about catching the surge.  I may not use them next cycle - plus they are an added cost.
