Self-Tanners-Do or Don't?

So, my summer glow has faded and I'm officially pasty white.  Before I was TTC I gave up using my favorite self-tanner Phytomere.  I've been doing some research online, and there are two schools of thought.  Some doctors say self-tanners don't penetrate deep enough into the skin to cause issues.  Other doctors say there's just not enough research to make a conclusion about the risks it could have on the fetus.  What are your thoughts?  Anyone using self-tanner now or thinking of using it?

  • I use a lotion by Avon that is a shimmering tanning lotion.  It's not a self-tanner, but just gives you a bit of color and shimmer. I love it!

  • I've been wondering about this too. I am a FL girl and I'm going to look ridiculous without my tan. I know being in the sun for a long time is a big no-no while pregnant. I've never had good results with self tanner though Confused
  • Like so much in pregnancy, it's a personal decision. I am very paranoid about chemicals in personal care products, so I won't be using a self tanner during pregnancy and especially not during the first trimester. I'm sure many women use self tanner and have perfectly fine pregnancies, but it's not for me.

I know there are many companies that make self tanners without parabens and artificial fragrances... Kiss My Face and Nature's Gate are two that I can think of off the top of my head.

  • My doctor told me the Jergen's Natural Glow and L'Oreal Sublime Tan lotions are fine. She also approved getting spray-tanned as long as your mask is tight and secure so you don't breathe in fumes. I use the lotions, but have never spray-tanned before. My sister did all through her pregnancy, and her baby was perfectly healthy.

  • Oops!  I didn't even think about self tanners and I use one on my face everyday.;  I'm glad you sad L'Oreal Sublime is okay because I believe that is what I use.
