When did you use blankets?

My girls just turned 1 and we are still having them sleep with the Halo sleep sacks.  I spent so much time of the first year being scared of SIDS and I still find myself checking on them at night to see if they are breathing to only sometimes wake them up and get mad at myself that I "had" to check them.  I am wondering when you started letting/having your LO's sleep with actual blankets and covers?  Everything I read seems to say after 1 it's okay, but I find myself still scared.  Curious what other MoM's have done?  TIA!

Re: When did you use blankets?

  • My boys have actually been sleeping with blankets since about 4 or 5 months. We broke a lot of 'rules', persay, since they also would only sleep on their stomachs. I was told that when they can roll over and are mobile that it's okay since they know if they are covered by a blanket and can't breathe, they will try to take it off (thank god for video monitors). Jaxson actually only sleeps with one blanket because the other crocheted one he kept sliding under so we took that out of his crib completely but Jayce sleeps with both blankets and loves them.

  • I think if I had video monitors I would feel better.  We are buying a new house this month and I keep telling DH that when we move we are getting the video ones.  Right now we are in such a small house I don't even use a monitor beacuse i can hear everything....but I think if I could see them I would feel better and not have to check on them like i do.
  • It's been so long that I don't remember exactly, but I think they were about 7 months when we started using thin blankets, maybe 8 months.  They started using thick blankets around a year old.
  • I think we started with blankets at about maybe 16 months old or so.   When they graduated to the toddler room at daycare, they started napping on little nap mats with blankets.
After 20 months TTC with PCOS, we were blessed with twins!

  • If your girls are mobile then, you're fine giving them a blanket.  I gave Emerson a blanket right at a year old.

  • I have mine small blankets at 6 months and larger (but still thin) blankets at 11 months. They also each have a lovey and the fisher price seahorse in their crib

  • I could have written this same question and the same thing about the small house and no video monitor.  Thanks for asking this.  I need to warm up to the idea of blankets.  I think I've been holding off for my own fears rather than them not being able to move them.  I hate that I worry so much.

  • 10 months - 12 months I graduay added blankets from the thinnest muslin swaddling blankets to their biggest thickest baby blankets now.  I am gonna hold on giving them the huge blanket that come with their bedroom sets for awhie yet though.
