The only thing that bothers me is tiny booty shorts, because I don't need to be seeing your a$$ cheeks hanging out everywhere. Gross and uncalled for. And I have a son who doesn't need to grow up seeing that either.
We were at the mall and saw a girl that couldn't have been older than 10 wearing these type of shorts. They were jeans but they showed off about as much as those little short underwear. DH and I were horrified. It wasn't even an act of rebellion without her parents' permission bc she was there with her mother.
As for jeggings -- can someone show me a picture of them looking cute? I've seen 2 pair - one on Jessica Alba's daughter, the girl is cute, the jeggings were awful, and a rack of clearance jeggings at Target that were beyond hideous.
I strongly dislike Vera Bradley. It looks like something my grandma would carry around.
As for my own -- if you've been married for over a year, I think it's dumb to have a marriage ticker. I don't care if you've been married for 3 years, 7 months, 2 weeks, and 4 days. For baby age tickers, it makes sense when you are answering someone's question because it could help to know the child's age, but marriage, I don't get it. I only get it if you're a newlywed and it's really exciting.
My other UO is that I am so sad that DS is going to grow up in a hunting community. My H does hunt -- he deer hunts although hasn't shot one in the 8 years I've known him (he just watches them) but he does love duck hunting. But ALL the men in his family/community hunt a lot. I am very distressed about this. I understand the arguments for hunting, and agree that when done ethically and responsibly, truly is a better situation than all the factory farming of animals going on. But my concern is that it's NOT being done ethically. I have heard 2 people (one friend of his, one uncle-in-law) comment in recent weeks that they shot a bobcat while on the deerstand. WTF??????? I will never trust anybody to take Colin hunting except DH b/c I know he is truly a sportsman and doesn't just kill to kill - esp on the deer stand. But I know this may cause problems in the future -- "no you can't go on the stand w/ uncle so-and-so", etc. I just get sick thinking of it, even though it's years away. I just wish he wasn't going to grow up around this at all so it wouldn't be an issue at all.
(yes I knew DH hunted when we married and I knew this would be an issue if we had a son particularly, but now that it's a reality it's even worse for me than I expected)
I hate it when people hunt for "fun" the sport of it I guess. If you are going to be shooting something you damn well better eat it. I know this will probably be unpopular (it would be in my town) but I think there is little difference in people who like to hurt/kill animals for fun and people who enjoy hurting/killing other people. It's the same mentality IMO. Some of the guys DH worked with would purposely hurt the animals, make fun of them as they died ect. It would make me so angry I actually left one of his work dinners when they were all telling there disgusting hunting stories. I was in tears it is so upsetting to me. DH doesn't hunt BTW - I would be fine with it if the animals were respected and where used for food.
That is f*cking appalling.
Thank you!! It is the norm for this group of men. It is refreshing to me to have someone agree with me. I wish there was some way to get them to stop.
I think you'd have to figure out how to get them to develop some empathy, and if you could figure THAT out, well, you could solve most of the problems in the world.
it makes me seriously sad/scared/enraged that there are people who delight in suffering.
This is why we need to teach our kids to respect nature and animals. Pack it in, pack it out when camping. Teach them that animals can feel pain and some sort of happiness and sadness just like people.
I agree totally with what you're saying. It's wonderful to teach kids to have empathy toward animals AND other people!
It seems to me like empathy for animals almost comes naturally for kids, though. I did have to work with my daughter to give soft touches to the cat, because she is so enthusiastic about it, but I never taught her to hug the kitty or try to share her sippy cup or graham crackers with her, but she does anyway. She naturally, instinctively loves that cat. And other animals that she sees as well. Is that something that kids unlearn when they see cruel behavior modeled around them?
THANK YOU. This is part of what bothers me about the hunting, even if it's done for in a responsible way, and all animals are consumed. My son is the exact same way with our cats. He is always trying to hug and kiss them and share things with them. He adores dogs, cows, horses, etc. I have intentionally gotten a lot of books about animals and am teaching him that we are kind and gentle and loving with animals. I don't know how I can reconcile that with him climbing into a duck blind to shoot the ducks that he now delights in feeding, you know?
I can't even address the cruelty mentioned in several other posts above. That is the kind of stuff that makes me feel like I'm losing my mind. That is exactly why I will NEVER let DS hunt with anybody but DH....you never know which "hunter" is really a sick bastard. (and there are enough of us w/ these stories that it's obviously not that rare). I can't imagine the rage I would feel if somebody did something so heinous in front of my child.

DH is Catholic and I'm Jewish. We celebrated Christmas (and Hanukkah) secularly.
