3rd Trimester

? from a 2nd tri regarding breech

I went for a fetal echo cardiogram today the the tech said that the baby is breech, i know i'm still fairly early (just about 25 weeks pregnant) but when was basically the cut off that the dr just scheduled you a c section date? i'm praying to god that this kid turns around because the last thing i want is a c section since i have a DS that will be 22 months at home. thanks so much!

Re: ? from a 2nd tri regarding breech

  • At around 36 weeks, my doc does a quick scan to check baby's position. Mine have all been head down at my 18 weeks scan and stay that way for any other scan I have had.

My SIL had a breech postion at the 36 weeks and they had her come in weekly for a quick check. And at her 38 weeks appointment they scheduled her section for the week after. Most of the time, a doctor won't do a c-section before 39 weeks, if the only problem is breech.

I wouldn't look for them scheduling something until you are at least 36 weeks. But you have plenty of time for your LO to change a few times, lol.

  • I wouldn't schedule a section for a breech baby considering some don't flip until the last minute. If I went into labor with him still down I'd have a csection...

Why did the tech even mention it this early? Seems a bit silly to even be thinking about it.

she wrote on one of the scans "breech" and i saw where she was showing his head and everything and i asked her, she told me not to be concerned at all since it's early but since i have another child, i'm sorta worrying about it. irrational, i know, but the thought of not having DS with me for even a minute is making me panic. let's just say, we both have separation anxiety over each other . it's my fault, i know!

  • i think it's really common for a baby to be head up at 25 weeks.  they still have plenty of room to flip around.  i think 36 weeks if baby is still breech is when docs start discussing options.

  • My LO flipped at 26 weeks, which I thought was on the early side. I think early 3rd tri is standard. You still have plently of time. Like PPs said, I wouldn't schedule a section for a breech baby - if I went into labor and the babe was still breech, I'd consider it, but the most recent research shows that vaginal breech birth is no more risky than section for the baby and a lot safer for the mom, so I would try to get my doc to do a vaginal breech birth first before going straight for the section.

  • My LO was breech at the anatomy scan at 19w, was head down at 26w, breech agan at 27 weeks, and now has been head down again each week since (I only know because I have had weekly bpp's). The perinatologist says she thinks baby was moving so much because my fluid was on the higher side giving her more room to flip, but that it is completely normal. At the last two the fluid has been normal and she hasn't flipped again, but I am still not going to assume she will stay that way until later on.

  • Your baby still has so much space that he can flip around at will. I wouldn't give this a second thought until 36 weeks. Also, breech isn't a "must have cs position" (for some drs, at least).

  • My baby alternates between head down and breech from my last 3 appointments and I am starting 35 weeks tomorrow.  So this should give you plenty of piece of mind about the amount of room your baby has.  My doctor said he still has room to move around and he is not concerned with it at this time.  He typically schedules c-sections at 37 weeks.  I would not be worried at all and I too am very surprised that the tech would even bring it up.
