I am posting this because I would like to see how most people would pronounce this name. Leighton. Would you say it like Lay-ton or Lee-ton. Now, I am not asking for the CORRECT way, I am asking how often the name is used for the two different ways I have heard it. Also, when you see this name, do you think boy or girl? TIA

There was a family whose last name was Leighton who I grew up with. It's pronounced Lay-tun.

A couple years ago, I would have said that since Leigh is the female version of Lee, it would be a girl named Lee-ton. However, my friend named her DS Leighton and pronounces it Lay-ton. Live and learn, right? Totally NMS

Lay-ton. I've only heard it used as a last name and as a boy's name. But I think it's a little feminine for a boy's name and a little too last name-y to be used as a first name at all.

When I hear of boys named Lay-ton I think of Lleyton Hewitt the tennis player. Of course, I don't know if that is a common spelling either since Ive only seen it on him.

Leighton (Lay-ton) Meester is an actress. When I used to teach I had a boy in my class named Layton so I think of it both ways.

Lay-tun I think the way you spelled it is the more girly spelling, but when spelled Layton I think it is more masculine.  It's one of those names that can go either way but personally I like it better for a boy.

This exactly. It's also more of a girl name to me. And for some reason I find it awkward to say, it has an weird flow for me.

Like she lays a ton, gets laid a ton etc. I really don't see the appeal of taking the masculine name Layton, and giving it to girls with this spelling. No girl should have the word 'ton' in her name. Or the word Lay. Just seems like it's an open door for mass teasing.

Actually, according to BehindTheName.com, Leighton is another masculine spelling of the original spelling Layton (which is also masculine). It has been commandeered by girls, because people see Leigh, and think it must be a girl name, but it's not. Both spellings are masculine.

Lay-ton and it is a man's name. My son is named Leighton after his 40 yo dad Leighton.
