Babies: 0 - 3 Months

How many wet diapers a day is normal?

My 7 week old still has at least 10 wet diapers a day, sometimes more.  I have never thought anything of it until dh mentioned it to his mother and she freaked out saying there is something wrong with her and she should only have 3-4 per day.  What is normal for your lo?

  • The doctor told me at least six a day. 10 is fine. I would worry if he only had three. Your MIL probably hasn't raised a baby for decades and unless she's got a medical degree, I'd just nod and smile.

Your mother-in-law must be joking, because 10 is normal. 3 - 4 would be a problem and would mean you aren't changing baby enough.

    This.

    THIS.

  • We easily get 10 - 15 per day at 9 weeks.  If it were only 3 - 4, your LO would be showing signs of dehydration (or diaper rash from sitting in a dirty diaper).  Your MIL is confused.

  • I'd check w/your OB just to be sure but the nurses in the hospital told me LO should have at least one for every day she's been alive, e.g., if she's 3 days old, she'd need to have at lest 3 wet diapers.  I'm guessing there is a cut-off around a week old but even that is more than 3-4.  That few would be a serious issue of dehydration or not changing her enough.

  • Thank you.. I never usually doubt myself but she was so insistent that there was something wrong.
