how many onsies do I need?

Alright guys I'm starting to get things here and there for the boys' closet. I wanted to know, what type of clothes do you guys usually have them in, to wear around the house? onsies? those cute terry footie layettes? Do you think I need both short sleeve and long sleeve onsies? I have noo idea and don't remember what we had for my daughter. Most importantly, how many onsies do I need for each baby? (a week worth) including pajamas, thanx I am clueless in stocking up for multiples but thank GOD I have you wonderful moms to help me! :)

Re: how many onsies do I need?

  • I'm a onesie and sleeper whore.  I love cuddly sleepers for around the house (and out) and I layer onesies under everything.  We have probably 15 or so sleepers, and 20 or so onesies (some SS and some LS).  We have more than enough onesies.  Don't worry about too many outfits, I think babies are cutest when they're in comfy, cuddly things for the first few months (I have so many outfits that just sat in the closet).
  • Thanks Aussie! You think there's a better deal on the onsies and sleepers besides Carters? I know carters are usually very cheap! :-P

  • Mine sleep in footed sleepers and wear them around the house, too.  I tend to do a load of laundry every day, so I don't need more than 5-6 sleepers per baby.

My most favorite sleepers are ones with zippers.  Gerber makes the sleep-and-plays that have zippers but my favorite ones are from Wal-Mart.  It's their brand (Faded Glory) and they are organic cotton, have zippers and are $5.  They are a million times softer than anything I have from Carter's and I like the prints better, too (I am so over animal feet!)

Since it's not that cold here, I have never found a use for onesies, except for using as PJs when it's too warm for footed sleepers.  If the babies aren't in sleepers, they are either in dressy outfits, or something like overalls (DS) and a dress (DD).  Not a fan of onesies + pants, but that's just a personal thing.

I tend to save the zipper sleepers for nighttime since it's so much faster to do diaper changes with them.  Snaps in the middle of the night are brutal!

  • I agree, my son LIVED in footie jammies.  He was born in Feb so the Carters fleece footie jammies just seemed like the best thing!  Comfy, don't have to worry about socks falling off or anything like that.  Whether we were home or stepping out, he was in jammies.  Zipper ones are much easier/faster then the snaps too!  When it was warmer and we were home it was basically just onesies.  I'd say to have at least 5-6 of each?  I usually do laundry once a week (which is about how long it takes for my sons dirty clothes to pile up into enough to do a load), but I'm thinking with twins AND my son I'll probably end up doing a load every 2-3 days?  I think less is more, I'd rather do laundry a little more often then buy a ton of clothes.  We'll see what our clothing siutation is once I organize all the hand me downs and we have our shower ;)

  • I bought lots of boutique things for Emerson and hated the sleep and plays when I had her but, with twins everything changed.

I'm in the deep south...warm weather year around with few days being really cold.

I do not take the twins out under any circumstances and they live in the carters sleep and plays.  I really try to keep the bibs on them so they don't get crazy dirty and most of the time I can get away with two outfits per twenty four hour period for each of them.

The laundry is outrageous as it is so, I don't change their clothes after their bath unless they get wet from spit up.

I don't do onesies on them under the sleep and plays.  Since they were preemies, I've tried to keep the house a bit warmer than I did with Emerson.

So....four outfits per twenty four hour period most of the time.

  • Great! Thanks guys, I will def check out wal mart for the zipper sleepers, only problem, with Florida being so unpredictable with the weather in the months of Jan-Feb I will have to figure out fleece or cotton, or maybe both.

  • When they were newborns I had maybe 4 sets of real outfits (onsie + pants) and we didn't need that many. We mostly stayed home and I preferred footie pjs. I also layered with short-sleeved onesies b/c my boys were so small. We had maybe 20 onesies but could have gotten  by with 10 b/c we did laundry all.the.time. I'd say for newborns around 10 onesies, 5-7 sets of footies (maybe some gowns if you like those) and a handful of long-sleeve onesies since you have a winter baby. 2 sets of outfits (so 4 total) would have been enough for me, but if you will go out more then you might want more. If you think you'll get clothes as gifts then I wouldn't buy any outfits and only a few footies since that seems to be what people like to buy.
  • I hate onesies and don't use them.  In the NB size all teh girls wore were sleep-n-plays.. both fleece and terrycloth material.  They had some that were a thinner cotton.  Now that they are in 0-3 month they have more outfits, but we still put them in the sleep-n-play jammies at night.  I just hate onesies because my older DD would have diaper blow outs and I hated having to lift the poo covered onesie over her head!  Plus we keep our house warm and they are always sweaty after being in the car seats so I figure they don't need another layer.

I'm in South Louisiana and we have pretty unpredictable weather, too.  I only do the cotton sleepers because I find my kids sweat in fleece or anything that's not 100% cotton.  If they seem cold, I just turn up the heat - mostly because I'm cold, too.  I'm not cut out for real cold weather :)

  • Thanx Mrs.Lnt I thought I was the only one with the unpredictable weather! :-o sounds like many of you have used, and babies seemed content with the cotton sleep and play zipper ones, that's what I'll get a few of..:)
