3rd Trimester

How many BH is too many?

I went to the gym tonight and walked. Nothing strenuous, just a 30 minute walk at 3mph. I had about 4-5 BH on the treadmill. In the 2 hours since then, I've had about 7-8 more. They're not painful, but definitely stronger than I've had up to this point in my pg.

Just wondering when I should start to be concerned. I've rested since then, but still getting them. At least they appear to be spacing out some.

Re: How many BH is too many?

  • The guidance from my CNM is call if they are more than 4 per hour for 3 hours, after drinking 2 glasses of water and laying on your left side to rest.

  • my midwife wants to hear about it if they are 10 min. apart for a couple of hours. I'd relax/hydrate for a while and see how it goes. Good luck!
  • The rule is 6 in an hour (I'm lurking).  Make sure you are drinking lots of water since you started getting them while working out.  I ended up in L&D about 15 times before it was time for LO to make her debut.  BH's can turn into real contractions and you aren't far enough along to want that to happen.  Call your OB if they continue or become more frequent.  HTH & GL

  • I'm pregnant with #2 so the midwives are less concerned and told me to expect more BHs and cervical pressure (I actually expected this after hearing about all the BHs my friends had during their second pregnancies).  I'm sure it's just from the walking and stuff, but it doesn't hurt to ask your doc/midwife is you are concerned.  From my understanding, the "rules" are a little different between a 1st pregnancy and subsequent ones.

This is me too. I kept reading if you have more than X an hour to call or do this and that. Well I am having so many. And they are not comfortable. My belly gets rock hard and heavy, no pain, just not fun anyway. I called the MW yesterday and she said I should expect them and vag pressure since this is #2. I am resolved to the fact that things are going to be like this until I deliver. Sad

Ditto this as well. At first the nurse prac. said if I had more than 5 an hour to call the on call doctor. Ummmm I get those pretty much everyday. So then I asked my OB at the next visit and he said if they are timeable, and more painful than usual to call. Then at my 34 week appt he said to only call/go in if I was having real timeable contractions.

  • My doc told me today that if I have more than 6 in an hour to call her...I would call, 7-8 is something your doc needs to know about.

  • I think my midwife said to call if it's 8 or more.  I had a good 10 in an hour about a month ago, and I told her at my next appointment.  She didn't seem concerned since I got them to stop by getting in the shower.  I wouldn't be too concerned unless you can't get them to slow by doing anything.  Laying on my side and drinking water does nothing for me when they get bad...only a shower works.
