toy storage/bookshelf from IKEA question

DH and I made a trip to IKEA today to get the expedit bookshelf to use as toy storage after seeing some pics on here.  My question...If you use this as toy storage, what kind of baskets or bins do you use?  I did not buy any from IKEA...thought I could get them elsewhere.  Any suggestions? TIA

Re: toy storage/bookshelf from IKEA question

  • I don't have the IKEA ones, but I was considering them until I saw this today at Costco. $130 and it includes the bins.

  • We have these from Target (different pattern) and I love them.  They only go half way in the cube so I can see what is in there.  I find the full coverage ones just collect "stuff".

  • aaaand, now I'm sad.  That is really nice! We bought almost the same thing without bins!! I don't have a costco membership, but I bet I can find someone who does. oh well, can't think about it now!

  • Don't feel bad! At least you bought yours and have it taken care of.

I really just came back into this post to say how cute your pic is. You have a couple of cuties!

  • I got bins at Lowes.  They have a similar sized box shelving unit and the boxes for it fit the Ikea one.  I have metal boxes for 10 cubes, the plastic Ikea boxes for 10 cubes and 5 open cubes.  It sounds funny, but it looks a lot nicer than just the Ikea ones.  I use 5 Ikea on the bottom, 5 open on the second, so DS can reach his toys, the metal ones on rows 3 and 4 and 5 plastic Ikea ones on the top shelf for stuff I don't use very often, like the humidifyer.

Isn't the same only at Ikea for only $69.99?  You're paying $60 more for the bins!  We love our Ikea one and I think it's made really well.

  • We have the Ikea Expedit shelves and the Itso bins from Target fit perfectly. We have mostly the fabric-covered cubes that are just a few inches tall. We use the full cubes for Build-a-Bear stuff, doll stuff and potato heads.

I was worried about the bins holding up, but we've had ours for over 2 years and they still look great.

I have no idea how much the IKEA ones are. If they are only $70, that is great! I need to look at my catalog and compare the sizes. 8 bins would average out to be a little over $7 then. I think Target has them for less. Either way, I went to Costco to buy one and they said they were flying off the shelf and OOS when I got there.

  • We have the Expedit and I have the fabric bins from Ikea, they fit it the best. I use to have the Closet Maid ones from Target before Ikea had their fabric bins. They were too small for the cubes and didn't fill the space. The Ikea ones are cheaper than the closet maid too.

Yah, you're right. I got two. The little one and the bigger one and I had them confused. I will head to Target to look for bins.

  • I have 2 Expedits for toys. I have some of the Drona boxes and some of the Flort boxes from IKEA (about 4-6 of each). The rest are Sterilite bins from Walmart that clip closed. They are the perfect width, and come in a couple of different sizes that stack. I have a lot more than in these pics.
