3rd Trimester

Baby's Position??

When do they test to make sure the baby is in the correct position, and how do they know? I'm 35 weeks, I don't have another Dr. apt until 37 weeks and i asked at my apt this week but my Dr. is in the hospital sick so they had someone covering and the lady had no idea what she was talking about.

Re: Baby's Position??

  • My doc checked me last week (36w, and some change). I'm sure every practice is different, but I think it would make sense that they'd check when you're around full term.

  • They should be able to tell just by palpating your belly.  I knew my LO was head-down from my 27-week ultrasound, and my doctor confirmed position at my 36-week appointment, I believe.

  • if they find the heartbeat in the lower half of the belly, that's a pretty good indicator your baby is head down. They can also palpate.

they tell you how to find how how your kiddo is positioned in there yourself.

  • Mine checks by palpating at each visit (I ask her to as well, so not sure she'd do it on her own otherwise), but I think I can tell throughout the day...I can def feel the back/butt/knees, and from there figure it out...back is hard/long surfacet, butt is the end, and knees are smaller, in the middle and hard and if you press on them for a little bit, she eventually does something like kick or move them out of the way - feels like rolling movement under my hands...plus feel for where your kicks or tickles are - big kicks can tell you where the feet are, tickles or littler pushes, where the hands are. I'm earlier than you are, so not sure if it gets easier or harder to palpate once you're farther along.

  • My OB told me at my last appointment that my LO was already head down, and that was at my 32 week checkup just last week.

  • Mine has been head down for awhile now (I think it's been at least 4 weeks since the first time I was told she was head down).  The last couple of visits, my doctor has taken a quick ultrasound peek to look at position and just to make sure everything else looks good.
