Unless your baby has an extreme health requirement, sterilzation is not necessary. Cleaning with hot water and soap is perfectly ample. If you want to do an initial sterilzation, boiling everything will do the job.
I sterilized them by boiling water and placing the bottles in the boiling water for atleast 5 minutes. Wash the items first with soap and water though prior to boiling them though. After that washing them in your dishwasher is sufficient.
ETA: The bottles I sterilized were the ones given to me by a friend for my breast pump. The playtex bottles I bought in store I just washed in the dishwasher.
