The doctor mentioned that they measure the baby at each appointment in one sentence and then in another told me that my u/s will only be at weeks 20 and 32. I realize that I should have asked her this question, but how can they measure the baby to make sure s/he is on track without an u/s?

Yep! As you start to get a little bigger they will bust out a tape measure to see how big you are. (At least with my last 2 DS's my OB did)

Starting at 24 weeks or later they may measure your fundal height externally with a tape measure.
