Croup

DS has croup.  We saw a pedi here today (we're out of town at my mom's) and they gave us medicine to help the inflammation.

With it, he's running a high fever - 104ish.

Other than the steam room, baths and alternating motrin/tylenol, is there anything else I can do for him.  He's so lethargic and hasn't been able to stay awake more than 3-4 hours at a time.

Re: Croup

  • DS had croup and after 2 days on the steroids he was good as new.  I would say encourage the sleep.  In addition to the steam room, as soon as you bring him out of the steam, plunk a hat on him, wrap him in a blanket and take him out into the cold fresh air for a couple minutes.

My DS had croup in hot weather, so I was having him dig in the freezer for favorite toys to get the hot-cold effect.  This is really good for the throat inflammation.

  • Check askdrsears.com. He has some good infor On croup. A high fever isn't common from what I remember of croup. My son has had it twice. Take your son outside in the cold (40 degrees or below) for a few minutes. It helps tighten and deswell (sp?) the cords. Were you given steroids? Expect mood swings, eating issues and sleep issues. I hope your little one feels better soon.
  • Generally the 4th day of it is the worse and that has stood true for us every single time. My LO has had croup I believe 6 times now. Everytime she gets even a little cold it turns into croup. Cold air also helps if your LO really starts having trouble breathing. My Pedi has suggested standing in front of freezer or now that it is winter wrapping LO up in lots of blankets and standing outside.

Do you have a nebulizer? You can use it but with a tsp of saline spray instead of abuterol.

My LO has never had a fever with croup but is normally a little more sleepy than usual. Just keep a close eye on your LO and if your mother instincts tell you something isn't right then go to urgent care.

    Good Luck
