Minnesota Babies

Minneapolis OB/GYN recs?

Hi everyone,
This is my first post here. DH and I just got married in May--we've been together five years. We have decided that I will stop using birth control six months from now so we can TTC. I would like to go see an Ob/GYN before we try, to get a thorough physical and advice for getting healthy before I get pregnant. I already have a 15 year old child, so this is not my first baby, but it has been a while! Here's some of the things we will have to deal with if/when we get pregnant, so any recs for a doctor that has experience with any of these is most appreciated. Bte, we live in downtown Minneapolis, so something closer by is better, but I am willing to drive anywhere if it's an excellcent doc.

Considerations:
* I will be 35 on August 19, 2008
*I had a gastric bypass in 2002 (have maintained a healthy weight for about 5 years now)
* My first child was born via (unplanned) c-section because they thought she didn't drop due to my hips being too narrow/baby being too big (she was only 8.4 tho)
*Pre-eclampsia and pre-term labor during my first pregnancy
*Labor didn't prograss very well--induced by doctor pulling my mucus plug, then breaking my water, then finally with pitocin.
*Due to my gastric bypass, I have a difficult time maintaining healthy levels of iron and vitamin B.

Whew! Looking back over this list makes me nervous about having a healthy pregnancy, but I am hopeful with the right nutrition guidelines and proper vitamins and advice I can be as healthy as ever and be prepared for whatever I need to be during pregnancy and labor.

Thanks in advance for any recs or advice!

  • I don't have an recommendations specific to your needs, but I do know that I enjoyed the Fairview Riverside hospital and the adjacent FV Riverside Women's Clinic when I was pregnant with my first son. The midwives there were wonderful.

I currently go to Allina now, and have only been there a couple times, so I don't know much about them yet.

    Good luck with TTC! :)

  • Hi.  I would first recommend checking on which hospitals will allow a VBAC.  I know that not all do.  I live in the East Metro, and we are attempting to have a VBAC at St. John's in Maplewood.  So definitely look into that and then look into which OB/GYNs will support a VBAC.

When I lived in Minneapolis I did see Kane, Patricia M. - MSN, WHNP at Park Nicollet in St. Louis Park for check-ups - she's great.  She delivers at Methodist Hospital (again not sure if Methodist will allow VBACs, not sure if she would handle a high risk patient for pregnancy).

You may also want to look into specialists for High Risk pregnancies - there are a few near the UofM and near Southdale/Edina I think.

    Good luck!

  • I went to University Specialists. They see patients at the U campus and near the Riverside Campus. They were great!

  • Hello! Dr Pearson at the HealthEast clinic in Vadnais Hts will try VBAC's and delivers at St John's in Maplewood. No c-sections though. She's a family practioner and is my primary Dr who also took care of all my prenatal care, delivery and now my little girl. She also handled my sister-in-laws 2nd pregnancy & VBAC considered high-risk due to having delivered baby #1 at 31 wks due to pre-eclampsia. If you're not comfortable with a family Dr, I've also worked with Dr Sam Arnold an Ob/Gyn at Comprehensive HealthCare for Women in Woodbury. He delivers at Woodwinds and does high-risk and regular pregnancies. He's one of the most compassionate Drs I've ever met.

  • Hi Ladies,

thanks for all your replies! I searched out the doctors you all recommended and saved their contact info for when the time is right to look for a doctor.

I don't even know if a VBAC is possible. I researched that possibility somewhat and took some online quizzs/checklists and it looks pretty grim as far as the possibility goes. I guess that's something I will need to discuss further with my doctor, too. One of my desired hospitals is UMMC Fairview Campus in Minneapolis, MN. I did an internship there and have also read about their facilities--I believe it's one of the best hospitals in the TC to deliver....anyone have any experiences with this hospital, good or bad?

  • I would also look into John Haugen, I am there right now and LOVE it. I started with the clinic because my mom had a lot of problems with her pregnancy-eventually having both ovaries removed- and many of the doctors there deal with high risk patients.
  • Paul Larsen Clinic---it's in Edina, right next to Fairview Southdale hospital.  Dr Jeffers-- she's just awesome! I've been going there for a few years now and Dr. Jeffers will delivering my baby.  She also specializes in high risk pregnancy.  It's a wonderful clinic, very comfortable and accomodating.  Good luck!
  • given that you've already had two major abdominal surgeries, i would definitely do whatever you can do to have a VBAC.  there are VBAC support groups in the Twin Cities that can help.  it's DEFINITELY possible and i would try to find a doctor or midwife who has experience with them.  GL.
  • I also loved Haugen & Associates.  I see Dr. Flom at that practice.  She delivered my son in January, and was fantastic throughout my entire pregnancy.  Dr. Elfstrand was on call when I went into labor and was with me for most of the labor - she was also wonderful.

    Good luck!

  • Ditto Haugen!  They have a downtown office too...

  • My DH and I are starting to try too and my sister recommended OBGYN Specialists in Edina.  Her doctor was Dr. Song.  She loved her!
  • Oakdale OB GYN. Love them!
