anyone else diabetic?

Hello ladies...is anyone else out there diabetic and pg?
I'm 6 weeks and as soon as we found out my doc put me on insulin.  Kind of strange to be giving myself shots, but if it keeps my little one healthy, I'm all for it!

Re: anyone else diabetic?

  • I have GD for the 2nd time, but have been diet controlled (my honest guess is that before getting pregnant again I may have even had pre-type II because of a strong family history).  Will you be allowed to be diet-controlled vs. having to take insulin the entire pregnancy?  My dietician today just put 3 ladies on insulin because thier glucose numbers where way out of control.  But, my guess is that if you are known to have diabetes going into the pregnancy, it may be a different story.

I think the only difference with being pregnant and diabetic (from talking with my parents who both have type II)  is that you need to seriously eat more protein - and keep your execise levels up.

Also, doesn't mean that your baby will be XL or diabetic - especially if you keep things under control.

  • Not yet, but my doc said at our appt yesterday that I have early symptoms of GD. Yikes. :(

  • well, I have type II diabetes...diagnosed about 3 yrs ago.
I was on oral meds to control it plus diet.
Then, when I found out I was pg, it was the same day I found out that my blood sugar had skyrocketed.  So, my doc said, "get thee to an OB!"  3 days later, saw the OB and he immediately put me on insulin and I'll have to be on it for the whole time I'm pg.
I figured that would be the case, since all the hormones, etc kind of make your blood sugar go crazy if you have diabetes.
It isn't as bad as I thought it would be to give myself shots.  Doesn't even hurt.

good luck to you if you have gestational, too.  I'm not sure what they would do differently for that from "regular" db.

  • I have type 1 diabetes, so I am used to giving myself multiple shots during the day.  My endocrinologist kept a very close watch on me during my pg, I had to go in once a month instead of once every 3 months, fax her my blood sugar readings once a week, and check blood sugar before a meal (which I always do anyway), and 2 hrs after.  In the begining of my pregnancy, I was actually having a lot of lows, so I had to reduce the amount of insulin, it definitely went way up by the end of the pregnancy though.  You should probably be able to go off of the insulin once the baby is born.  GL with everyting!
