We hired our Au Pair!

Oohhh this had me so nervous the last month or more!

Because of the outrageous (but understandable) cost of childcare, it made more sense to bring in an Au Pair from another country.  Since DH works from home we are comfortable with this, as he'll be here to help and monitor the "situation" over the next year.  For those who don't know, an Au Pair is like an Exchange Student who stays with you for a year, in your house.  She (or he) works 45 hours a week caring for your children and is paid weekly $176.  (Program fees for training, flights, and other things make up another 8k of the annual cost, bringing the average weekly cost to $320).

Anyhow - - we hired Angela from the Netherlands, she is so excited to work with three babies as her University focus of study is child psychology and she wants to open an infant-specialized day care when she finishes school.  She's young (20) but has over 2000 hours of documented experience with children under 12 months.  She also has twin brother/sister who are 10 years old and she (the oldest in her family) spent a lot of time caring for them and learning the quirks and interactions of Twins.

She's arriving December 12, so I should have a few weeks with her before I have to return to work.  We did ask if she wanted to arrive after the Christmas holiday season, but she said she was quite excited to celebrate an "American Christmas".  DH jokingly wondered (to me) if that meant she expected commercial excess and an abundance of presents ;)

Just had to share!  This is a huge weight off of my shoulders, since Icould have these babies any time now and be stuck in newborn la la land for the first few weeks following...

If anyone is interested in the program you can email me - erin underscore crilly at yahoo.

Re: We hired our Au Pair!

  • Congrats! We had friends that did this for their three children and had a wonderful experience. They loved the girl that came to live with them.  Hope it works out for you!
  • If we had a bigger place and I had gone back to work, that's a better deal than 2 in infant daycare... congrats!  She sounds like the perfect find and it must really take alot of stress off...
  • Loading the player...
  • we have an au pair from germany ... she arrived a few weeks ago, and she has been a DREAM!  i went back to work part-time last week, and she is caring for our 7-month-old twins.  she's so great with them, and they have already taken to her.  i was a little concerned because of her age (19), but she also had a ton of childcare experience, and cared for an infant w/ cystic fibrosis from birth to age 1...so i figured she could handle twins.  so far, we are very very happy with our choice.
  • How did you decide on an au pair? On the one hand I think it's a great idea, but I'm not so sure I'm crazy about someone living with us (even though we have an extra bedroom with an en suite bathroom). I'm interested in the thought process and your experience, if you don't mind.
