Baby Names

It's a GIRL! Need opinions...again!

It's a girl! I was afraid of this but I knew it was a girl. Of course we had the boy narrowed down to one, with middle name figured out - but we are totally stuck between two girl names. I know I've done this with you all before but now that we've narrowed it down I'd love some more input!

In one corner, we have Eloise! Eloise is for my grandmother, who is still very much with it and who I am very very close to (almost like a second mother). Her name is Lois Ann (goes by Ann these days). Our problem with Eloise is that a friend of mine just chose the name for her baby, making it a little less unique than I originally was hoping for. Not loving Ellie as a NN - other thoughts on that are welcome (Lola?). We are also having trouble pairing it with a middle name. I love Eloise Ann since it's the closest to my grandmother's name, but not sure I love how it flows. We were originally set on this name but are wavering now.

In the other corner, we have Vivienne! Vivienne is for my maternal great great grandmother (but my mother was close to this whole lineage of her family and would consider it a sweet tribute). We both love Vivi as a NN. Our middle names for consideration, all family names:

Elizabeth
Lillian
Lucille
Reine (pronounced Wren)
Mae (only for Viv, we think...Ellie Mae is still a little bit hillbilly?)
Beatrice
Louise (Obv. only if we went with Vivienne, to still honor my grandmother that way. Any other suggestions welcomed!)
Ann
Virginia
Annabelle
Holly
Marion
Harriet
Mary

Lastly, there would be the option of Anne Louise, as a double name. I'm in the South so this would be normal :).

OK wise baby name boarders, go after it! I know many of these vintage names hit a sweet spot around here, as they do for me :). If you have a great pairing for Eloise that isn't on the list, feel free to speak up. Looking forward to seeing what combinations/solutions you come up with! Thanks so much in advance!

Re: It's a GIRL! Need opinions...again!

  • Because your friend is using Eloise and you don't like Ellie...

    I vote Vivienne Louise.

  • I really love all of your choices.  I think Anne Louise is my favorite (I love double names).  Or what about Mary Eloise as a double name?

Edited because I didn't mean to quote you!

  • Eloise Jeannine is the top choice if I have a baby girl, but my wife would prefer the name to be Phoebe Eloise.

I love your list and don't think you can go wrong.

  • I love double names so I vote for Anne Louise.
  • Eloise is great. It's sweet and old-fashioned, but not too common (I see a lot of Evelyn, Maeve, Charlotte, etc.)

Eloise Elizabeth, Eloise Vivienne, Eloise Annabelle, Eloise Beatrice

Mae would be fine, as long as you weren't going with Ellie. Lola is fine for a nn, but then again, she might choose Ellie as her own nn later in life. My grandmother was Elizabeth Lou and went by Betty and for that reason hated her middle name.

  • Gorgeous names all around! I tend to lean toward Anne Louise. I think it's lovely and underused. Of course, Vivienne Eloise would be a lovely name as well. ;)

  • I'm partial to Eloise Ann as that is my daughter's name. :)  Mary Eloise was my grandmother's name but I opted out of the 'Mary' as I thought the two together sounded just a bit too 'old' for me.  Anne Louise is pretty but I must admit that I thought of "Tina Louise"- the chick from Gilligan's Island- when I first read your post.  Vivienne is pretty but I find it to be a bit of a mouthful.

As for a NN for Eloise- we call my daughter 'Ellie' but thought of calling her 'Ella'...just for another option. And I wouldn't worry too much about your friend also using the name...*shrug*

PS- I love that back in February when I first entertained the thought of using "Eloise" it was considered too old-fashioned, and now, less than a year later, it's the front runner for so many people! :)

  • What about Annie Louise? I'll admit, I don't like Eloise or Vivienne at all. Eloise to me is part of the -el trend. There are just a million Eloise/Elizabeth/Elle/Ellie/Ellas out there and I'm bored of it. Although the Lola nn could be cute.
  • Vivienne Lucille or Vivienne Louise. I kind of like Vivienne Harriet too. I like Eloise too but I wouldn't use it in your situation. You are lucky to have so many lovely family names to choose from for the mn!
  • PLEASE don't name her Eloise!! As soon as I hear that name I think of an old lady. Vivienne is ok.
