I dropped my phone in a public toilet :(

There is nothing grosser than sticking your hand in a public toilet to get it. I have it in rice to dry out, but I think it's gone. I am so sad...

I can't even go get a new phone because we are switching companies when my contract is up and that's not until August. Thankfully, I do have an old phone I can use in the meantime.

  • Put it someplace warm (like on top of a heat vent)  Do not put the battery back in for a week.  Run a hair dryer over it and see if any condensation shows up on the screen at all, if it does, don't put the battery in it.  It will definitely be hopeless if you put the battery back in and there is any moisture at all.  I worked for a major cellular company.  It really does work to let it dry, but you have to be patient.

You can take the sim card out and put it in another phone if you have an old phone.  If you ask on facebook for one, I am sure someone has one that will work for your carrier laying around.

I once ran my phone through the washing machine.  Once it was completely dried out, I charged the battery and it worked like a charm.  Don't give up hope!

  • ugh...my mother did the same thing and they told her that was the #1 place that phones get ruined (toilets)!
  • I dropped my blackberry in the dog's water bowl; took it apart and laid over the heat vent for a few days and it was fine.  I also ran the video monitor receiver through the washing machine, did the vent thing, and it too works ok.
  • If, by any chance, it's an iphone, try going to the genius bar.  They switched mine out for me for free before Christmas.  Normally it's a $199 charge, but for some reason, the guy said he'd take care of it.

I was trying to help DD not get her dress in the toilet and reached over real quick to save her dress and out went the phone. I'm so sad about it...

  • I would not even try to get it to work. I could not get over it being in a nasty public toilet.

Absolutely.  That phone would be gone.   I wouldn't even be able to make myself get it out.

    Sorry that happened!

    This.

There is NO way I would have gotten it out.  NO way.

  • Ugh.  That totally sucks.

I got my iPhone wet over the summer, working in the garage, and the sweat got into it.  Luckily, it was still within the 1 year warranty period, and it was considered  only minor moisture damage.  It wouldn't power on at all, but they apparently have two sensors; if the inner sensor isn't triggered, it's still considered minor, and they replaced it for free.  Try it (whatever phone you have); you never know. They might give you a new one without having to upgrade.  You can also always try ebay/craigslist.

  • i can't imagine how gross that was to fish out.  that just sucks.  so sorry
