this is the first year we won't be having people over and i'm looking for some fun/yummy but still easy food ideas for dh and i so it's not just a regular 'everyday' day
When we were growing up, my mom always made a bunch of appetizer type things for us. Veggies & dip, chili cheese dip, mini hotdogs wrapped in crescent dough, etc. I'm thinking of doing some vegetarian versions of those for us this year.
Every year we make cheese fondue and have a "picnic" on the living room floor with champagne. After we eat we play board games and watch movies. It's low key, but fun!
Growing up we always did hot oil fondue, but that isn't real easy or baby/toddler friendly. Like a pp we also played board games and it was a ton of fun! I think apps would be fun and yummy and you can make it as low-key or as fancy as you want. We do floor picnics with DS now and then and he thinks it's the coolest thing.
We always treated NYE like it was a gluttonous party. We'd have lots of snacks since we'd eaten dinner earlier and just go to town. We'd play Michigan Rummy until it was time to go out and bang pots. We'd have a selection of nuts (the expensive ones we don't eat all year like cashews and pistachios or in the shell walnuts), there'd be fruits and veggies and dip, pretzel assortment because everyone has a different favorite, two kinds of chips, and a selection of everyone's favorite candies and cookies. We'd all have wine or beer. I usually got a small half filled glass. And if there were any hor'doerves we wanted we could have those as well. I used to like taking the dinner biscuits and spreading peanut butter on them or putting some sliced cheddar on them in the microwave for a few seconds until it just started to melt.
