Breastfeeding

supply and demand..yeah right

LO has been demanding 4- 5 ozs, my supply is saying "yeah right" I don't know what to do. I really don't want to supplement with formula, but i just can't keep up. I tried EBF, EP everything. I don't know what else to do. At first my supply was great where I was able to stash a good amount, now i've been going through it, and I shouldn't be. Anyone else have this dilemma?? I want to BF, but i think my body isn't making enough anymore....ahh....

Re: supply and demand..yeah right

  • My supply has tanked too. I had a nice freezer stash but not anymore. :( I have nothing, I barely have enough pumped to go to the MIL's when I go to work. We suppliment with formula when necessary, I'm not going to starve my child because of my pride. It's hard giving her formula when I really want to give her breastmilk. But I just can't keep up anymore. I give her the milk I pump and she usually takes 1 formula bottle a day. We also have her on solids so it helps some.

Good luck & hang in there. Some breastmilk is better than none IMO.

  • Does she not seem satisfied after nursing? It can be very hard to EP and keep your supply up. Babies are more efficient than pumps. You might pump and get 3 oz, but if you had nursed, she'd probably get more out. Our bodies also respond better to baby than the pump. Nursing frequently tells your body to increase production to meet baby's growing needs. I'd focus on nursing and would ditch the pump for a while. If you need to build a stash, pump sometime in the morning - that's when your supply is the highest. You might want to check out www.kellymom.com too, it's a great bf'ing resource.
