Brushing teeth?

How old was your DC when you let them start brushing their teeth themselves? Our DD is 4 1/2 and she does a good job. But we always brush after her just to make sure she didn't miss any areas.

Not sure when to let her start doing it alone....

Re: Brushing teeth?

  • My son is just over 4. We do what you do, he brushes then we brush for him. We just saw dentist and she said to continue having a parent brushing with him at least until next appointment 6 months from now.
  • My DD is a few months from 5 and we still help.  I think she can probably handle it by herself soon.

exactly this.  But the dentist said we have to help until she's 6.

  • just recently... dd is a month shy of 5.... but I'm brushing her brother's teeth at the same time and watching her..... if she's brushing good and brushes long enough, I let it be. she does a good job. she's very serious about it. so excited about her new spinbrush too. lol.  if she does a slacker job or seems to be rushing through it, then I follow up and brush them.

dd's dentist recommended a philips sonicare ... but it's $70.  figured we'll start with the spinbrush to make sure she'll tolerate it and maybe go for the sonicare next year. the sonicare one for kids plays music and tells you when to switch sections... it breaks up the brushing to 4 quads.... upper left, bottom left, upper right, bottom right.  prior we've used the brushes that light up for the length of time they should brush.... and now the spinbrush.
