DH and I are going on a cruise in April. We are debating getting passports. The travel agent rec. them just in case we get to the Bahamas and there is an emergency at home and we need to fly back otherwise they are not needed for the cruise. It will cost us almost $300 for the peace and mind of knowing if we are in the Bahamas and something happens at home with the kids or whatever we could go to the airport and show them our passport and fly home, no questions.  The thing is its only really going to help us that one day from the hours of 12p-10p on Thurs. here's the itinerary:  I know they are good for like 10 years but we don't travel out of the country often.

 

Jacksonville, FL		4:00pm
Tuesday, Apr 12	Fun Day at Sea
Wednesday, Apr 13	Key West, FL	7:00am	3:00pm
Thursday, Apr 14	Nassau, Bahamas	12:00pm	10:00pm
Friday, Apr 15	Fun Day at Sea
Saturday, Apr 16	Jacksonville, FL	8:00am

 

I know it's a risk and with my luck somthing will happen that one day that we would need the passport in order to fly home. WWYD?

I thought you needed them regardless of being a cruise or not? I could be wrong, but I'd be getting them regardless.

If it's just for one day, I can see why you're questioning it, but don't you live in MI? I would think you would want it for Canada. In general, you never know when you'll need it and I think everyone should have one.

This reminds me that DH's just expired and he need to renew!

I see no reason not to.  The consequence of not having it and needing it could be pretty great and they're a useful thing to have anyway since it's always good to have a spare photo id if something happened to your drivers license.

We went on that cruise last year. I don't have a passport. When we were on the island, there would have been no way for anyone to get ahold of me anyway. Actually, I don't think I even talked to my parents the whole time we were gone! (They were the one's watching the boys).

Actually you NEED one to get back on the boat in Nassua.  I would spend the money to get one because it is another form of ID and you never know when you might need one.

I have been on 2 cruises and was told both times that I needed to have my passport. Granted, my cruises left from the US but were then out of the US for all the stops so that might be the reason vs your trip which is only one non-US stop.   I would get them - better safe than sorry and they are good for 10 years.

Get one. You never know when something may come up and you'd like to use it. Even if you don't think you'll go out of the country you never know what happens.
