Babies: 9 - 12 Months

So, what do you do when you have a 9 month old who still...

doesn't really eat solids?

I offer her solids twice a day - in the morning and in the early evening and both times I feel like I'm throwing away all the food I make for her.

I started her on the basics at 6 months, but put them away for a while because she literally just gagged through each spoonful.  It was awful.

So, I tried again at 7 months with basically the same reaction.  I still felt like maybe she wasn't ready, so I put them away again until 8 moths.  Since then I have been religiously offering and trying to shove some in her mouth every now and again, but honestly she wants nothing to do with any solids whatsoever.

I've even tried the BLW approach and it worked for about a week, but she lost interest.

Is this somthing I should be worried about?  I mean, I would have really liked to be down to 2 or so sessions of BFing at the one-year mark, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen.

And at this rate, I'm literally wasting time and money making food for her that I wind up throwing away everyday.

So, what do I do?  And is there anyone else out there like this?

  • Just keep offering it, and be consistent. Don't stop and then try again. I started DS on solids at 6 months and offered it every single day. He didn't show any interest until 9 months, and now he eats like a pig.

  • Is LO hungry when you're offering solids? Maybe try and change what time you're offering them at? I also agree with the consistency - keep at it. Monster isn't a big eater, he will eat maybe 2nd twice a day. We just got some puffs and he had them for the first time today and he did awesome! I still offer solids even if he doesn't eat anything. Good luck mama!
  • I wouldn't worry about it....at her age, eating solids is really just practice. Keep at it and eventually she'll get it.

I agree to not be worried! After a year is when I would be worried!

I am a little different I guess. I would not try to force it everyday.

My LO doesn't eat that much solids but I just try to go with what he wants.

A friend's girl would not eat anything that was given to her. She had to pick up the food and all. And it was table food. But you said your tried BLW. I would keep at BLW and have her lead. I know my LO took a while to getting used to eating. He is just barely getting into it and I started at 7 months. I am sure she will hopefully show more interest soon!!!

    Good luck!

  • Also, it seems like the reason you're upset about it is that you're wasting time and money on her food. DON'T! Just give her some of what you're eating and if she eats it great. Then there's no stress about food going to waste or you taking time to make something that gets thrown away.

  • By solids do you mean purees??? My guys are 9 months and will eat purees but no finger foods. For the last month I offer puffs at each meal and they gag. All of a sudden, last week they just starting eating them with no problem. Just be consistant and keep at it   :)
