This morning, we had a growth ultrasound at 9am. Joe and I dropped off Katie at school and headed into the hospital. We arrive and wait about 30 minutes for the scan to begin.
During the scan, I noticed that Baby A was much smaller than chunky Baby B. After the tech was done obtaining her measurements, it was discovered that there is a 21% discordance and Baby A fell below 10% weight for her gestational age. Baby A was weighing in at 4lbs. 11oz. and Baby B was 5lbs. 14oz. Baby A is also really low in my pelvis and the tech had difficulty getting the measurements.
So, my primary doc comes in and says, he wants to admit me to the hospital and that I will be having the babies either today or tomorrow. He wanted to run some doppler flows on the umbilical cords and also some bloodwork.
So, I head upstairs to be admitted. Then another doc in the practice comes in and says, that the blood flow in the umbilical cords look great, the babies are reacting great on the NST and that they want to monitor me for 24 hours and decide from there what to do with me. Ugh - why can't docs just agree.
So, I may be delivering babies tomorrow, I may be released tomorrow from the hospital and continue outpatient monitoring, or I may stay in the hospital until my c-section next Friday. Ugh!!
Here is my gripe. Measurements are so hard to get from an ultrasound late in the game. There is such a high variability that the measurements could be off my a pound either way. If the discordance was 18%, Joe and I would be home and continue with what we were doing. The babies are not in distress. Even the nurses are like, "Why are you here?"
They aren't doing anything in the hospital right now since this morning's u/s. My BP is great. The babies are great. I have a high probability that I will be sent home tomorrow. I will do whatever for the babies, but I just don't see a difference from inpatient monitoring to outpatient monitoring that I was doing. It's so frustrating being so close to my already scheduled c-section.
Katie: 1/16/08 2lbs. 15oz.
Abby & Emily: 12/31/10 6lbs. 2oz. & 5lbs. 7oz.
Re: Admitted to hospital...
huh. It makes me wonder why my MFM was never concerned with my boys- they ended up almost 2lbs apart at birth - but it was never an issue... maybe b/c they were always both good sizes for their ages? I just know it was never a concern. They are 10lbs apart now -they are just different sized kids.... what is it about your two that they are concerned with? is the smaller one too small?
do you celebrate christmas? that would really suck to be in the hospital on Christmas.
prayers that you get sent home and cook until your scheduled date!
They are mo/di and concerned since Baby A fell below 10% for her gestational age (IUGR) and a 21% discordance between the two. However, with the variances on u/s and no other signs of distress (great cord blood flow) it makes me really question what they are looking for.
We do celebrate Christmas and this is the first year that my daughter really understands what is going on. I'm not sure if I want to postpone or let her celebrate Christmas morning with my parents. It all depends on what happens tomorrow. It's all just really frustrating.
