Trying to Get Pregnant

Beta Blockers?

Is anyone here on beta blockers? I have been on them before because of a heart condition. I have been experiencing arrythemia, palpitations and SVT recently, I think as a side of effect of medication but I'm not sure. I may have to go back on them as I have already have surgery for it, but there is no way for them to 100% fix it.  If you are currently on beta blockers what are you taking, and what did your doctor say about taking them while TTC and if you had to stop when you do become pregnant.

Re: Beta Blockers?

  • I'm on one. It's Labetalol and I take it for high blood pressure. It's used for hypertension caused by pregnancy (and for pre-eclampsia) so definitely safe to take while TTC and pregnant.

Thanks! Everything I was seeing was that it causes birth defects and wasn't safe, but if my heart condition is flaring up then I really won't have a choice.

  • I had a good talk with my doctor about and asked her if I should stop TTC until my BP is under control and she assured me this is fine. Obviously, my health is my number 1 priority and as much as having to stop trying would suck, I'd absolutely do it to ensure I was as healthy as I could be when I do conceive. RNsteph talked to me about it too, and she didn't express any concerns, either.

  • Also, she said that once/if I become pregnant, it will be up to my OB to control the dosage. I think my vitamin D deficiency may contribute to my HBP, so once that's under control, I may not need medication. Your circumstances may be different though since you have an actual condition (rather than HBP).

Thanks! I had a Vitamin D deficiency about 2 years ago, I hope you can get yours under control. I will see if the medication you said is an option if I need to take anything when I go in to see a cardiologist.

  • If it makes you feel better, when I was pregnant with my son, I had a weird heart thing one day. The OB put me on a beta blocker for about a month to help the rhythm work its way back to normal. I was probably between 5-6 months pregnant.

  • Sorry to hear your heart condition is giving you trouble. I hope you get it all figured out soon. Be safe, Lopey!
