Okay, I was a little impulsive at Target today when I saw this bedding set I had been eying on sale:
We've had the same plain blue quilt (that I love, it's a really nice quilt) since we got married and I just needed something else. I really like the way this looks, and it wasn't a big investment.
But now, of course, I need to repaint. Which is fine, because I've never liked the camel color we painted before we moved in.
Here's my question: those flower-things in the bedding are a dark plum. DH is color blind, so as far as he can tell, they are navy blue. Would it be mean, and too girly, to paint the walls a lighter shade of the complimentary plum color? (Like find the exact shade on a wheel, and go two notches lighter or something?)
I always try not to girly up the room too much, since he has to sleep there too. I know the bedding is already pushing the female-factor. Am I better going for the green?
Re: NBR: Paint Color Question (not for nursery, for our room)
I was actually thinking the plum would be a nice color to bring out. Could you do white walls with a plum accent wall?
I'm no interior designer so I am having a hard time picturing a lighter plum color with it.
And too me painting them green would be too much green.

If your DH is color blind- do whatever you want. That kind of makes me wish my DH was color blind... I think that light plum colored walls would look great with that bedding, but make sure that the color you choose has a little grey in it and is somewhat muted. My monitor may be displaying the color differently than in real life, but if you paint an entire room a few shades lighter than the color I see, it's going to be extremely bright. I worked as a decorative painter/ faux finisher for a while, and have seen rooms where the swatch was a lovely color, but once a whole room was painted it kind of hurt your eyes.
I think the plum would be a nice contrast. The green would give the whole room a really cool and clean feeling, though, but it could be too much coolness.

Yeah, my mom, the decorating genius, would be helping me for sure. Left to my own devices, it would be a disaster
And I feel bad taking advantage of the color blindness...but seriously, he sees blue instead of purple (he can't see the red that changes it), so maybe it's a win-win?
Can you PIP a sample of what you mean by "light plum"? To me, plum is a deep purple. There is no light plum. Anything taht dark would be very dark to paint your whole bedroom.
Is the non-patterned background of that set light blue? You could go with a light blue. I don't think the green would be too much as long as it's not the same green. If you go for a really light green, it would look nice. Our living room is Benjamin Moore's Castleton Mist, which is a really lovely light green and our dining room is Ace's Grove Hill, a couple shades even lighter than the Castleton Mist and could almost pass for a neutral - it just has a hint of green. It could be my favorite wall color ever.
A gray with blue undertones would also complement nicely. And if you went to Dunn Edwards or B Moore, I bet you could bring the pillowcase in and they'd help you find a complementary color.
I like the idea of a light gray with a slight purple tint. Or the pretty aqua. Straight up light purple may be pushing the girly factor just a bit, IMO. And I'm just not a fan of the green. But that bedding set is BEAUTIFUL!!!
GL with whatever you decide!!!
Oh, I like this idea! I'll second the just say no to an accent wall. We did that in our bedroom and I hate it. Of course it's still there though.
PS as long as it's a darker shade I don't think it will be so "girly" - think sophisticated.
By "light" plum, I meant taking the case in and finding the exact match, and then going a shade or so down on the color card. My mom has done that, with great success - the tint is similar, just the boldness is a little more muted.
If that made any sense.
I do think the aqua might also be nice. Maybe that's the way to go - it's more two gender friendly. I just have a lot of light blue in my house, so I was thinking of being different. Plus, Cami's room will be aqua, so I'm clearly type-cast here.
And I think I agree about the accent wall. We have a lot of walls in our bedroom (it's angled, and the closet and bathroom angle weird), so I don't think the effect would be the same.
Balls. I'm just going to let my mom tell me what to do, her house should be in a magazine.
Hey, you underestimate me, lady! I'm not so bad w/ a saw. M on the other hand, no way. He's the eye candy in these situations.
