Infertility

All my GC ladies, please come in...

Are you guys doing IUI or IVF with your GCs?  Right now, we are getting ready to do another cycle of IUI with my sister sometime in January.  And I know that it's not that intrusive with IUI and I know that with IVF it's going to get a lot more intrusive and demanding of my sister.  I was just wondering, what the consensus was on the board. I hope my question isn't too confusing...

 Thanks.

  • I think there are 2 different kinds of GCs - one where you are using the GC's eggs (and could then do IUI or IVF) and one where you are using your own eggs so you would be going through the egg retrieval, etc., and the GC would carry the baby although it would be genetically yours.

It sounds like you're doing the first (where your sister will be both your egg donor and your GC), so in that case, IUI vs. IVF would just depend on your sister's situation.  I think the main concern that would come to my mind is how the financial aspects of it would work in terms of paying for the meds, the IVF costs, time off work, etc.  It sounds like your sister is really there for you, but IVF would just bring up more logistical issues.

  • We did IVF using my cousin as our GC, as we wanted a chance for a baby to be 100% genetically ours.

Honestly, my cousin said that her portion was very easy, as basically she prepared for a FET while I was the one who was stimming and whatnot.

Yes, we are using my sister's eggs and hubby's sperm and she will be carrying.  They can't get my eggs because I'm on coumadin and it's very dangerous for me to go through the ER procedure.  My sister is very open to IVF but I'm just wondering if that's just too much to ask of her?  Does that make sense?  I know that she is willing but I just feel like maybe that's too much to ask.  Right now we have another January IUI and where's using Clomid so I"m crossing my fingers and praying my prayers that this one works and this is just a moot point...but I know my chances aren't that good.  Thanks for the info!

I think you need to make sure that she is aware of everything that will be involved, the injections, the surgery, the risks, etc.  Then, it is her decision to make. Since she is willing to carry a child for you, I think she is probably fine with IVF too.  I don't think you need to make the decision yet.  Try a few more IUIs first.  If there are no other issues going on, it should work, but may take a few tries.

Good luck. What a great sister you have!
