Upstate NY Babies

Wait......what???

Dylan (my little chunker baby....or so I thought) had his 1 year appointment today. The Dr. wants to see him back in 6 weeks for a weight check.....he's only in the 10th percentile for weight.  She said it was nothing to worry about, as this is common once babies start moving around more.  However, she just wants to make sure he's gaining.  I was just shocked because he is not a small baby.

And I swear things change so much.  You really can't keep up.  When Justin turned 1, the Dr. (same Dr.) said we could give him whole or 2% milk.  Today I asked if we should do the same for Dylan.  She told me things have changed since Justin and now they're saying babies can have 1% and skim too because the american diet is full of fat.  She told me to give Dylan whatever we drink until she reviewed his stats and saw he was on the low side for weight.  She wants me to give him whole or 2% instead.

Re: Wait......what???

  • Do you remember how much he weighed? What is his height %age? That does seem odd if he has been average all along - but I do remember you saying that he wasn't liking his bottles as much a while back?? ALSO - they need to calibrate the scales at the ped office - maybe something happened and they need to calibrate it. They weighed Evan once and I was in the room right next to the scale and the next kid that went up was off according to the mother so the nurse fixed it and the weight was right. So I asked for Evan to be re-weighed, haha! But I needed to know these things.

Our ped said 2% (she said to start last month! But we only started recently) and they bump kids down to 1% at 2yo. So now DH and I drink 1% regular and Evan drinks 1% organic and Leah drink 2% organic - haha! (I have really tried - but I don't like the taste of organic mil. Although I did drink it while nursing, bleh)

I'm sure he's fine - but I would ask about the scale calibration if you think something is off. Leah was 21lbs at her last appt about a month ago - for a frame of reference.

  • Hmm...seems weird. Do you have a scale at home to maybe get an estimate? Telyco may be right - maybe their scale was off.

  • That is weird, maybe the weight was off.  Either what Telyco said or maybe he moved part of his body off the scale a bit?

What size clothing is he in?  What's his height and weight?

At dd's 15 month appt I really thought they were going to tell me she needed to gain more bc in the last month I have felt she looked sooo skinny.  But it turned out that she grew 2 inches from 12-15 months, so it was just spread out more haha.

And FWIW, she has been consistently at like 40% weight and they tell me to give her whole milk.

  • They said he weighs 19 lbs. 14 oz.  I can't remember his exact height but he's 50% for that.  And clothing has been tough.  He's in 12-18 months but some of it is still big, yet the 6-12 is too small for him.  I do have to say that I have noticed he does seem to be losing some of his chub recently but he still looks very healthy to me.
