Postpartum Depression

Did therapy help?

I was on an Wellbutrin and Xanax pre-preg for about 6 years. I'm at the point now where I know I should start taking the Wellbutrin again it but I really don't want to expose LO. I've read the studies of how little goes into the milk but it's just a personal preference that unless I get worse I'd rather not take it. And honestly any antidepressant I've taken hasn't helped much, it's been the fast acting anti anxiolytics that have helped me get through the short term tough periods, and I know I can't take those and nurse.

Anyhow I've done counseling/therapy in the past and not gotten much out of it. I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar situation and therapy has helped. Did your OB help you find a therapist? I was there today and he just pushed me to start taking the meds and go see my psychiatrist again but no mention of therapy.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Did therapy help?

  • I was just going to ask as well.  I've been on Wellbutrin for 6 months and I still cry all the time.

I just started Therapy last week and have had two session (my work pays for 3).

I don't know if it takes awhile or what, but so far I'm not impressed.  I don't know if it's a matter of finding the right therapist or what?

GL - I hope you feel better soon!

  • Well I am not yet a mom but am expecting and I just wanted to chime in on therapy.  It will not really "work" in 2 or 3 sessions. You need ot build a relationship with your therapist so that you can trust her.  It is a very big part of the experience. Also I think that you need to discuss with the therapist what your goals are. What are you looking for? What do you feel you need?

I have been in therapy for years and myself am a therapist and while it sometimes it may take time to find the "right" person for you - if you keep trying you will find that person.  best of luck and I hope that you are feeling good.
