THIS PI$$ES ME OFF

wanna know why people are fleeing the catholic church, bishop?  it's b/c of morons like you!  You'd rather let a woman/a mother of 4 die in your facility than treat her all b/c of a prolife stance.  Does killing 2 make more sense than performing a D&C to save the mother?    As a woman (who still thought of herself as Catholic, but is seriously doubting everything that comes out of that Church) who has been diagnosed with preeclampsia TWICE... I'm offended.  I would never want an abortion.  I would never seek it out as birth control.  And I'm sure this woman didn't either.  She had PULMONARY HYPERTENSION and was at risk of DEATH.... She's had to MOURN her loss... what you're doing is a SIN, bishop.  You should be excommunicated for preferring to allow the death of two lives vs saving the life that could be saved.  Shame on you!   I hope God has more mercy on you than you do for this mother and those who took great efforts to save her and her child.

Re: THIS PI$$ES ME OFF

  • One of my friends had a situation like this and it freaking broke my heart.  Not as severe, in that HER life wasn't at risk. But her unborn child had no skull.  She went for a second (and third) opinion and was told by all three doctors that once her child was born, she would die instantly (as soon as her brain hit the oxygen).  My friend agonized over her decision but decided she just could not bring herself to birth a baby that was going to die instantly and chose to have an abortion (she was 5 months along).  Her hospital would not perform it due to religious reasons and she had to cross a picket line to abort a baby that she wanted to keep more than anything in this world but was doing what she thought was best for her and her family.  SO so sad!

  • It amazes & saddens me what people will say/do in the name of the man who was supposed to be the most loving and compassionate person to ever walk the earth...I think Jesus would shudder in horror at a lot of the stuff that is done in his name.

Jodi, my heart breaks for your friend.  I hope she has been able to find some peace.

    Standingfuckingovation.

The God I believe in is a God of love and abhors the evil that men do supposedly under the guise of religion.  If it turns out that I'm wrong, well I hope to find a comfy spot in hell because that's where I'd rather spend eternity than surrounded by people like Fred Phelps and that evil bishop.

You take my ovaries, I take your yarns.
  • What everyone else said. I was raised Catholic. This is why I don't practice anymore! As a woman, it makes my heart so heavy and disgusts me to no end.

I could get (but would not endorse) his stance if she was far enough along that the baby was viable outside the womb. But 11 weeks? FFS. F.F.S.

This post reminded me of this Colbert piece:

  • That Colbert link was hilarious! Interesting too that Colbert is very involved in his (Catholic) church and a Sunday school teacher to this day. I think the "good" people fleeing the church is the wrong approach. You don't leave because things are screwed up you stay to affect change. I am not Catholic but I have my own hang ups about Christianity (as a Christian) but I'm not intending on jumping ship.

  • I just officially converted to Catholic.  (I had my confirmation and all of that last Saturday, actually.)  So, all of "what the church teaches" is pretty fresh in my mind.  I had this exact discussion with the priest about a month ago.  What he told me is that the church does not accept, in general, the taking of one life to save another BUT there are cases where it can be accepted.  The exact example he used was this:

A pregnant women has some sort of medical condition and being pregnant is likely to cause her to die.  She cannot save her life and compromise that of her unborn child.  But what if she has three (or whatever number) at home?  In a situation like that, it would be accepted because if she were to die, she would be leaving those children without a mother.

which is the exact thing that happened to the woman in the article... but this particular Bishop believes it was a sin.

(per the Pope to people in Africa) condoms can prevent the spread of hiv , but they shouldn't be used for birth control.

you are not to use birth control of any kind and if you have issues with infertility,  treatment is a sin as well.

13 years in a catholic school (k-12),  I've read the catechism,  seems to me this bishop was using this as an example.  this poor woman who has had to mourn the loss of a child now has it dredged up again b/c some man decided to use her story to make a point.  a poor point.   a point that just shows that as women , we're worthless in his (the bishop's) eyes. I know he's just a man and not God or Jesus or Holy Spirit....  but there seems to be a good number in high authority in the Catholic church who preaches the same as he.   Doesn't make me lose my faith in God or Jesus.  Doesn't make me less Christian.  Just shows me the flaws in man made religion.
