Pregnant after a Loss

Low h/b at 6 weeks

Hi-

I have not been on The Bump much, but I was surfing around debating posting this question and then I found this board so I thought you ladies could help.

DH and I ttc for 7 years and in that time I had 4 early m/cs before getting pg with miracle ID twins.  I had every RPL test under the sun and the only thing that ever came up was elevated FSH so my losses were attributed to egg quality even though 2 of my 4 losses were tested as normal males.  When I got pg with my twins I convinced my OB to give me progestrone and Lovemox and although my pregnacy was high risk I now have healthy 16 month old boys.

I was shocked to find out a few weeks ago that I am pg again.  My initial b/w showed great betas, but my progestrone was on 15 so I started suppliments.   I had my first u/s on Monday and saw the sac, yolk sac, and heartbeat and was relieved that the embryo was measuring on track at 5 weeks 6 days.  However, the h/b was only 109 and my OB and the u/s tech said it should be 120.  I was hoping for peace of mind with this u/s, but now I am nervous.  I have a follow-up u/s next Monday, but I was hoping some ladies had a similar thing happen and still had a viable pregnancy.   From doing my own research I think perhaps it was a bit too early to attempt to measure the h/b.  Thanks!

Also wanted to add that I am 36 if that helps.  I'm starting to think the low p4 coupled with the low h/b might be an indicator this LO is fighting for life and I can't help but wonder if the progestrone/Lovenox are just delaying the inevitable?

  • My Baby's was 114 at 6w4d if that helps.

  • Your u/s tech is full of crap.  The h/b will always be low when it starts out, and 5w6d is very early.  At 5w4d, my baby's h/b was only 93.  Your progesterone is also reasonably normal.  If baby's measuring okay, that's all that matters.

  • At 5 weeks, 6 days, the heart has barely begun beating. I'm a little surprised they have any issue with that BPM measurement. It seems right to me.

I would stay on the progesterone and Lovenox for sure, I don't really think this u/s implies anything other than that your pregnancy is in its early stages.

  • Congratulations on your healthy boys and this pregnancy!  I don't think the heartbeat sounds low.  At 5-6 weeks, the heartbeat has just started.  Plus, you might not be as far along as you think, you might be a couple days behind.  The baby's heartbeat just starts at 5 weeks and is about the same as the mother's, about 80-85 bpm.  From then on it will increase about 3 beats per minute per day during that first month.  By about 9 weeks it will be much higher, about 140-170 bpm.  So, I think yours sounds just fine.  And, for what it's worth, a progesterone level of 15 isn't all that low, the average is 12-20 at weeks 5-6.

This. Sounds like a stupid ultrasound tech. They shouldn't be giving information like that anyway (which was definitely incorrect.) That is the Dr's job.

  • Thank you so much guys!  This is the exact reassurance I was hoping for.   In my 5 other pregnancies I have never had the h/b measured this early on.  So I feel much more at ease now.

Also, FWIW I didn't mention in my op that in my previous losses my progestrone started high and feel steadily until it went under 12 and then my loss would occur.  This is the first time my progestrone was as low as 15 so early and that is why I was concerned about it.  I personally like to see it about 20.

  • My first US I think was 6w4d and had U/t of 115bpm and my Dr and US tech were thrilled with that! GL

This.  At 6w2d my LOs hb was 103.  At 8w3d it was 181, and everything seems to be progressing normally.

  • A hb of 109 at only 5w6 days sounds fine to me. I mean, the heart only starts forming around then so I am not sure what they are expecting. With our first pregnancy our babies hb was around 85 at 5w5d and the tech was perfectly happy with that as it was so early still.

  • My LO's HR was 117 at 7w2d and he's doing great--due in a week and a half!  I think 109 is great for 5w6d.  I thought they looked for a HR of 100+ that early.  Good luck!
