If I was there in person and got a thank you, that's good enough for me.
However, if I shipped the gift and had no clue if they even got it, then I like a thank you (be it in an email, on the phone, a card). Just something so I know they received it.

I'm with the above poster: we don't usually do them for Christmas (usually with the gift giver and obviously give a verbal thank you) But all other times we send them
But if a neighbor drops off a gift, or it's shipped to the house, they are not optional. DS and DD sent birthday thank-yous to Aunt V and the California grandparents. They will do the same for Christmas gifts (as will I).

We don't do thank-you notes for Christmas presents in my family. For any other event, however, they are a must.
ETA: We are all local--no gifts shipped! If we did get a gift in the mail a TY is in order (I'd probably call).
