I'm debating on this too. We don't really need any other "big" stuff for our registry so I think it may be fun to splurge on one. I think it would be fun to spy on LO. If we had other stuff to fill the registry I would probably just get the audio.

We LOVED our video monitor when DS was small. I was on the fence about how much we'd like it before we got it, but now I think it's vital. I still love being able to just quickly see what he's up to without risking waking him up.
I think if you are on seperate floors, it's a must. Our friends had one and used it religiously. She said it was also nice if he was fussing, she could wait a minute and see what the problem was before she went in there. It also helped her decide if it was worth it to run up and down the stairs!
We are on the same floor, but our in-laws bought us one, so we'll be using it. It's the Summer Infant video monitor. It got good reviews.

We are getting a video monitor. I have asked a bunch of friends about this and they all say the same thing... video! One thing that they mentioned made total sense to me. When the baby is sleeping or in the crib and you hear stirring... you can check the monitor instead of peeking in.. plus... I can check whenever I need to with out waking the baby.

I really do think it depends on your situation and what your main concerns are. For me, I am really worried about SIDS and so we are getting the Angel Care monitor (which is audio) that is a movement sensory type of monitor. Our bedroom is very close to the nursery so I don't feel the need for a video monitor.
We had/have just an audio monitor for DD and I often wish I could see what is going on in there. I'm pretty sure I'm going to splurge on the video monitor next time around. The more information the better! Granted, I don't think it will help with my SIDS fear - I'm sure I will still be in there making sure the baby is still breathing.

We got the plainest audio one we could find. Our place is so small I don't think we even need it, but DH wanted it for when we do dishes or other noisy stuff in the kitchen.

Originally we just got a sound monitor, but I found with LO that she tends to be a noisy sleeper, so often I would go in thinking that she was awake, but she was just grunting/squirming. I'm hard to shop for, so I suggested to my dad to just get us a video monitor for Christmas. He gave it to us early and I LOVE it. Now when I hear Claire squirming, I can actually tell if she's really awake or just doing her normal sleep grunts.

THIS exactly. We had the Angel Care monitor for DD and will def. be using it again with our next child. It was SUCH a huge comfort for me. I never had any interest in a video monitor as an image of a sleeping baby would do nothing to calm my fears that they were still breathing. She was in the room with us for 8 months anyway (and yes, I still used the breathing monitor) so any time she fussed I would see her in person. By the time she went in her room I was so accustomed to her "cries" I could tell if it was a real situation or her just stirring.

This. I actually think a video monitor sounds like fun, but all things considered I'd prefer the comfort of the Angel Care. LO will be in a co-sleeper by the bed for the first few months and then down the hall (we live in an apartment) a bit later, so that's a factor for us too.

For me, a video monitor ranks up there with a car seat.
After LO transitions to a crib in the nursery after a few months, the nursery is on a different floor, and on the other side of the house. If I'm going to schelp all the way other there, I want to make sure that it's warranted
