DH really likes the name Paloma. It was Pablo Picasso's daughters name, but he thinks it's just beautiful. I don't dislike it, but I feel like it's pretty out there?
The first thing I thought of when I saw it was, mmm, polenta. LOL. It's not terrible, but, it's not the best name I've ever heard either. What about Pamela instead?
I think Paloma is beautiful (it means "dove" in Spanish). I know two adorable sisters named Paloma and Luna ? they are very sweet girls with very pretty names.

This.
It's not an uncommon name in other parts of the world, especially among Spanish-speaking cultures (hence the Picasso association). I also love it, but if you're a "Kayla" kind of girl, you probably won't like "Paloma" too. No offense to anyone who likes "Kayla." The names are just on 2 different stratospheres.

Love it. I think it's classic (in Spanish-speaking countries, at least) and beautiful. Plus, I can't really see how anyone would have any pronunciation issues with it, it's fairly phonetic.
Just wanted to add that it doesn't need a nn. Polly is terrible, however you look at. Poppy doesn't make any sense at all with this name and Spanish-speakers would roll their eyes if you used Lola (since Lola is a nn for another name, NOT for Paloma).
Caetano Veloso has a lovely song named "Paloma" that was featured in Almodovar's movie "Talk to Her."
I think it's really pretty if you're a Spanish speaking family, and kind of an odd choice if you're not.
We are not remotely Spanish... both German.
Our DS's name is Maxwell (Max) so I feel like it might not fit in well.
It is very pretty though. We have a tendency to shorten names so I feel like she will end up with a nn no matter what. As long as it's not Polly I'm ok, haha.
My friend's daughter is named Paloma and I've loved the name since I first heard it. The "Polly" and "Poppy" nickname suggestions seem ludicrous to me. The rhythm of the name is very current (three syllables, ending in A), the meaning is beautiful (not everyone considers meaning, but I always do), and it's unique but not exceedingly rare. Go for it!
Nicknames come as you know your child. For example, my little one's name is Mahlia + I call her Li li. I thought I would call her Mia or Lia--not yet atleast.
In terms of it being an odd choice if you are not of Spanish decent, well, I guess it would only matter if you cared. It's my pet peeve b/c my children are 1/4 Italian, 1/4 Polish, and 1/2 Indian, and our last name sounds very waspy since it was shortened. I want a name that is indicative of no ethnicity.

NN could be Polly if you went with Paloma.
Polly?
