Switching to Heparin...what is your dose?

Hello ladies!

I am currently on 40mg/day of Lovenox. I have a Protein C Deficiencey but never had a clot. In 2 weeks at 36 weeks I had the choice to either go off meds completely or switch to Heparin. I decided to switch to Heparin to be on the safe side of things. The dose they are putting me on is 10,000 units twice a day. This sounded high to me since I am currently on a prophylactic dose of Lovenox.

So I was hoping you could all tell me what dose you are all on or switching to. Thanks!

Re: Switching to Heparin...what is your dose?

  • I'm switching in one week.  When I was at the Dr. yesterday she mentioned that I'd be on 50,000 / day - that is the typical dose.  She was going to check with the MFM Dr. that we are consulting with though to make sure.

I am currently on 40 mg / 2x day of lovenox.

I'll find out what the dose is when I go back on Thursday and can update then.

  • Both lovenox and heparin are weight-based dosages. I'm on 80mg / 2x daily of lovenox and i'm not sure what my heparin dosage will be when I go on it in 2 weeks. I'm sure it'll be high.
  • Hey,

I just got my Rx for heperin and I am on 5,000 units twice a day.  They ordered pre-filled syringes for me.  Walgreens has to order them so I 'll get them on Monday.

  • I also have a protein C Deficiency as well (no blood clots either), and I am currently pregant with my second, but I was curious why your doctor switching you to heparin?  My doctor told me that I could not go past 37 weeks, so the week before I stopped taking my aspirin and three days before I stopped taking my Lovenox, and my son was born at 37 weeks.  So I am just curious how other doctor's treat the protein C deficiency.
  • mmiller051,

I am not being induced (unless I reach my due date), so that is why my doctor is switching me to heparin at 36 weeks.  Sounds like some doctors induce while others let you go into labor on your own.
