Working Moms with Physically demanding hours/work...

Hi Ladies.  I am in the fitness industry, and have a very challenging schedule, that fluctuates based on my clientele.  Today, for instance I worked from 6AM-11:30AM and then I go back for the evening crew, 4PM-7:30 PM. I'm on my feet the majority of the day coaching clients, and I teach three classes a week, that are physically demanding.  Like most of you, I'm fighting crushing fatigue, and am getting nervous about how I'm going to handle the rest of the first trimester.  Those of you who have long hours, or physically/emotionally demanding work, are you making plans to cut back, or will you be trying to push through your schedules?  Would love some input, as I try to figure out if I can handle my workload.

  • There is no scaling back for me really. We are slow right now and will get really busy after the first of the year. I sort of handle other peoples issues and take on other people's stress, so I have some concerns coming up.

Right now, I am trying to not take on things that I don't absolutely have to to minimize stress.

Also, little naps have been helping. I envy that you have a break in the middle of the day, thats when I'm the most tired :)

  • I hear you!  I have a very demanding job, and the m/s and fatigue hit me like a ton of bricks yesterday.  I guess I should rephrase...I'm not vomiting yet, but man am I worried!  I work three overnight shifts as an ICU nurse, 13 hours at a time.  It's not uncommon to NOT sit until 7,8, or 9 hours into my shift if I have a super unstable patient!  I go to work for my next three tomorrow night and am really worried...

My plan...take each day as it comes.  Cutting back isn't an option for me.  I'm a FT employee and I hardly have at PTO time since I just started a few months ago.  I'm just hoping to get through it and be lucky enough to be one of those people who suddenly have tons of energy and no more m/s at 12 weeks!  And I guess I'll use this board to commiserate with people on!

  • I'm a substitute teacher and I'm on my feet all day.  The good thing about subbing is I can take the day off if I feel really crappy...but I want to work as much as possible the rest of the school year to save up money.

  • I too have a very physically demanding job and long hours. There is no scaling back on hours for me. No one else can do what I do and I have many people who count on me to be there. I am just taking it one day at a time and hoping for the best. I am dead tired by the end of the day and do my best to just relax and sleep when I am home. My house is paying for that but I don't even care anymore! I keep telling myself there are other women in my profession that have done this many times, I can do it too!

  • I am hoping to push through to at least July, but my job is such that if things get too bad I am going to have to fill out my FMLA and walk for a few months.

I work as a conductor for nyc subways, so between the cramped working spaces and the very real dangers of the job... I just have to take it as it comes.

  • I'm a server so I work at least 8-10 hours a day where I am constantly on the move. I get to sit down at the end of the night to count my money and that's it! I would love to cut down on hours but I don't want to give up the best shifts, which is what I have now. I compete against my coworkers as company policy and the people with the best sales are able to choose their own schedule and are given the best sales producing sections. If I were to cut down, I would lose my standing in the top percent of my coworkers.

  • I am a Zumba instructor. I plan on trying to teach all my classes untill 36-38 week. I lease space so I need to do it to keep my space to rent. I might have to switch to more low impact when my belly gets really big, but I am counting on some of my regulars to step up to the plate and show the high impact version.
