Pregnant after a Loss

6 contracts in 40 mins but possible answer!

So I had 6 in 40 minutes last night (my threshhold).  After 40 minutes, I rolled over to my side and monitored for another 20.  The nurse who read my strip asked what I did differently the last 20 minutes and I told her I was on my side.

Ohhhh... She said the first 40 minutes (I was on my back, with my torso semi-propped, reading) were active and that sometimes if I were to lay like that, the uterus starts to contract b/c it's not getting enough blood flow!!!

That makes sense, but I also feel like when I lay on my side the strip is not as accurate for some reason.  I had felt one contraction during that second 20 minutes (but the monitor didn't pick it up).  When I'm propped up, I feel like the toco monitor is really close to the uterine wall and it picks up little variations b/c my uterus is tighter.  When I'm on my side, the pressure is off the toco and the line is almost flat.

So.. my question to research with them today is: Am I having less contractions on my side because there's more blood flow and I'm simply not contracting, or is it because the monitor isn't picking them up as strongly?

This stuff is driving me BSC!!!!!!!!

  • Oh, and this would have made a whole heLL of a lot of sense when I was in the hospital with severe contractions with my twins, FLAT ON MY BACK per my OB and MFM.  That's why I'm kind of incredulous that it could be the solution...

  • I have no idea. I am so worried about you Sad I say stay on your side for now. They have no idea what is causing the contractions? When are you going to the doctor?

No idea what's causing it.  My guess is that my crappy cervix has started to "beak" and by now, probably funnel above the TAC.  The TAC band at this point is the ONLY thing holding him in.  I just feel like when your cervix is open just a tiny portion, my body just goes into hyper-irritability mode.  I'm not worried yet, and neither should you!!! Smile  I'm going to make some calls today and see what I should do next.

  • Personally, I think laying on your side helps lessen contractions. Although with Lily, I felt them both on my back and on my sides equally strong. This time around its more uncomfortable than pain, and if the toco belt is tight enough and in rt position (my tummy only gets hard on the rt side)it will pick them up. My MFM's partner pretty much told me that I can contract every two min as long as they aren't "painful" rythmic and changing cervix. I don't know how much truth is in that, but his rule is if I contract and don't feel it then it is more than likely not changing cervix. So stay hydrated, rest A lot, and call ob if there are any changes in intensity. ((Big hugs)) let me know how it goes.

My last cervical check was at 23w4d.  My OB doesn't check CL after 24 weeks, instead she monitors for PTL...  I think that's pretty standard.

  • I notice when I'm on my back that I get a few BH. I then roll over and they stop.  I've been trying to get off my back, but it's easier to watch tv that way.

  • That is a really good question... I don't know, I would definitely ask your doctor... I know that one of the books that I read said something about when you lay on your back, you don't get as much blood flow to the baby (because of all the pressure), so who knows...

I am so sorry that you are still getting them!  I thought that they had kind of settled down for a bit?  Thinking of you, and hoping that they go away for good. :-)
