Affordable eff shampoo/conditioner?

Now that I've used up the crud in my shower, I'm trying to buy better.  But I'm having trouble finding something I can afford and that is safe.  Searched all the brands at my supermarket, and the only SLS free was Burt's Bees, so I bought it.  The only one at my health food store that wasn't ridiculously expensive had SLS!  And now that I check Burt's, of course it's one of their poorly rated products.

What do you use?  I tried Dr. Bronners BTW-made my hair feel almost sticky if that makes sense.

Re: Affordable eff shampoo/conditioner?

  • I've been ordering a lot of personal care products on vitacost.com because their prices are about half of my local store prices so I can actually afford the EF products, plus they have more options.  I try to do a bigger order to absorb the $5 shipping cost.

As far as shampoo and conditioner, I'm using Nature's Gate jojoba shampoo and ACV/water as conditioner (I love how the ACV makes my hair feel but I'm currently working through it not ending up so tangly).  Then I'm only paying for the shampoo basically.  I wanted to love a shampoo bar (I tried JR Liggets) because that would have been reasonably priced because you also don't need conditioner with it but it totally didn't work for my hair unfortunately.

ETA:  I did use the Burts Bees pomegranite & raspberry which worked pretty well for me after about a 2 week transition period.

  • I use and love Gudonya Too from Etsy.  A little goes a long way and it smells delicious :)

  • I buy Organix Coconut Shampoo and conditioner.  They even sell it in big bottles at my BJs.

  • I also order from vitacost and have tried several. I lime Dessert essences Organics. It smells wonderful. Avalon and Aubrey organics were ok too.
  • I was a loyal Gudonyatoo user for a long time, but lately money has been tighter and I've been trying other brands that are a little more affordable (FYI, I always buy stuff without SLS).

I've used almost all the Organix scents, and really like them.  I've been using Nature's Gate conditioners are really like them, too.  Last night I bought a Vitamin brand conditioner and it smells sooo good, but I haven't tried it yet, but it looks pretty good.

  • I like the stuff by Jason's. It's not certified organic, but it is leaping bunny certified, and doesn't have parabens, SLS, or petrolatum.

  • I liked the Organix brand as well - I bought it at CVS, I think it's regular price is like $6-7/bottle, but I got it on a BOGO promo. I think I had the Shea butter variety.

  • I have thick, curly, dryish hair.

I wanted to love organix but it totally didn't work for me at all. One of my friends tried it too and she also hated it. We used the coconut variety.

Nothing can compare to the Redken All Soft that I used to use, but I refuse to use it anymore since it isn't EF.... The best EF hair stuff I have used has been Desert Essence Organics. Coconut is my favorite type because it works best in my hair but I also like the raspberry and the grape scents too.
