High-Risk Pregnancy

GD and under weight

So, as many of you know I was diagnosed with GD last week. I had my bimonthly check up at my OB yesterday and she says I need to gain more weight- as I have only gained a total of 5 pounds (I am 32 weeks). However, the baby is measuring (fundal length) on track, and her HB is fine.

My question is: how in the world am I supposed to gain weight with GD, anything major I eat causes my blood sugar to go up- not too much, usually 130-140. I have been adding more peanut butter to my oatmeal and trying to eat a lot of protien but I can't seem to put on any weight. I am so frusterated.

I see my endo tomorrow, but I was wondering if anyone else had experience with this? What are some high protien/low carb snacks you like!?

  • I am in the same boat. And even though I am on bedrest I have been losing weight because of the deterioration of the muscle. I eat a side salad at least once a day with full fat dressing. I put butter instead of margarine on muffins or toast. I eat a lot of peanut butter and full fat cheese and cream cheese with crackers. Nuts are also a good source of protein and fats. Good luck!

  • I had the exact same problem. I lost weight the first few weeks until I got the hang of the diet, but once I got used to it, we got back on track very well.

Since portions at each meal are limited, the trick is making sure you eat enough snacks through the day. My diet plan called for three meals and three snacks daily, and I really had to eat them all to get my 2K calories.

As pp mentioned, choosing calorie-rich foods is also important. I used full fat mayo and salad dressing. Natural peanut butter and regular nuts are high in healthy fats, as is olive oil. I also ate lots of cheese and greek yogurt.

GL! I promise it gets easier after the first few weeks!

  • I had the same problem with my pregnancy. It was so frustrating because I was following the diet and tried eating more protein and high calorie foods. In the end I had only gained 5Lbs. LO was healthy but was measuring small too so I was induced at 38 weeks and was born at 5Lbs 11oz.

In the good news I was down 20 lbs below pre-pregnancy weight only 2 weeks post-baby!

Hang in there & try to get those calories in!
