Yes - my DD knows the ABC song and can recognize all upper case letters, counts to 19, knows most shapes (still struggles with hexagon and pentagon) and knows quite a few colors. I think this has all been going on since 18 or 19 months.
It's just so cool to see them progress!
Oh and she has started learning colors in spanish - daycare has been teaching her.
yeah, ditto mostly what the pp said (and DD is just about to turn 2). except instead of spanish we do lots of sign language! however our neighbor boy the same age thinks everything is a circle and everything is orange. LOL! it happens at different rates for everyone, but they'll all learn it eventually!
K will be 2 in February and right now she can count to ten in English and Swiss German, with help in High German, she knows most colors and can finish most lines in the regular stories we tell her.
DS can identify all upper-case letters except 'W' (he thinks it's just 'M' upside down) and all numbers up to 10, but he can't say his alphabet or count past 3. He knows circle, square, triangle and 11 colors. He got the letters & shapes down by 22mos, numbers & a few colors by his 2nd birthday, and just recently really gets the rest of the colors right on the first try.
The only part of the alphabet song he'll even attempt is 'Now I know my...etc' which sounds like 'Now I Now I Now I (unintelligible syllables)' He used to only sing ABBBBBB. Now he just needs to get the middle part down
She sings the alphabet song. It goes like this ABCDEFG QRF TUV W X Y and Z. She can recognize A and O and I and some consonants inconsistently. i think she accurately names A and O pretty consistently....maybe M. When reading, she knows that written words represent sounds/verbal words, that you read L to R and that letters have sounds. She doesn't care too much about letters.
She counts to 10 consistently. She counts to 15ish inconsistently. She seems to have decent 1:1 correspondence when counting objects. She labels, "one X" or "two X" frequently. She counts 1-8 in spanish....which cracks us up. I don't think she recognizes any written numbers - certainly doesn't name them. But I think she recognizes they are numbers...just like the ones she counts.
She recognizes most typical shapes. She names star and heart and maybe a random one here or there.
She knows a lot of colors - Out of the 4 topics you named, this would be her strong point by a long shot. She loves colors, and shades of colors, and comparing colors, and naming the colors in everyone's clothing, etc.
DD turned 2 in November. She knows all the letters of the alphabet, can count to ten, knows the colors of the rainbow, knows shapes (heart, circle, square, triangle), can name most common animals on sight, knows the words to about 15 songs, speaks in 4-5 word sentences and can name all of her grandparents and aunt and uncles (not an easy feat with our families!).
However, she can not walk in a straight line and is always running into things!
One of our neighbors is a little girl 1 month older than DD. She barely talks but is far more physically advanced - can walk on a balance beam, completely dresses herself including shoes, jumps and runs without ever falling down, basically climbs every tree in sight. DD just watches her with amazement!
Yes. DS LOVES numbers, letters, etc. DS will be 3 in March so he's a bit older than some of the responses.
Colors, yes knows them.
Shapes - knows them including pentagon, hexagon, octogon
Letters - knows all upper and lowercase and sings abc song. He spells names and words too.
Numbers - obsessed with numbers...........knows them into the hundreds.
He just seems to love numbers and letters....he would rather play wtih them then some toys. He takes after hubby.....you teach him something he remembers it. I wish I had the capability when I was in school
He can say his ABCs and recognizes all capital letters and a few lower case.
He can recognize letters on signs and is starting to figure out what letters certain words start with.
He can write both L, I and V.
He can count to about 35 in English and 20 in Spanish.
He can write 1, 8, 9, and 10.
He knows and recognizes all of his colors in English and most in Spanish.
He knows his shapes and can draw the basic ones.
I wouldn't worry too much about this though. It really depends on the child. Our DS does not physically challenge himself much. Still needs us to change his clothes, not potty trained, has no interest in climbing (still in crib)....
My child recently turned 2 but has known letters through J, numbers through 10, colors and basic shapes since the summer around 20 months. We try our best to stay on top of reinforcing the school curriculum at home.
Yes she knows the ABCs and heaven forbid I try and sing them with her, lol. She knows a few letters, like P & C, but really just knows the song--not the actual letters.
Same thing with numbers. She can count to 15 in English and almost to 10 in Spanish (we skip a few numbers).
She knows the shapes as well as her colors--though sometimes she still mixes up yellow & pink.
my 18mo old twins are barely talking.... one doesn't say anything and the other has about 10 words. They are certainly not singing the alphabet or talking in spanish... and i'm not worried at all.
my older son hardly said anything until 2y/o... now at 3.5 he is doing everything he should be and more. I am a former kindergarten teacher - and can tell you that kids all progress at VERY different rates.
I don't want anyone reading this thread and the other replies to think their kids are behind --- b/c doing all that stuff before 2y/o is not average... but once they are older, it averages out for most kids... so don't worry if you read the rest of this and thought "OMG- i need to work harder with my child!"... because you don't--- just let them have fun, read to them, talk to them, sing with them --- and it will all happen when they are ready.

ITA - I love and hate posts like this - b/c it is really cool to see all the stuff they can do, but at the same time - who cares? DD was counting one two five six until like 3 days ago and I was impressed by that! Now she added three and four back in and gets up to 10! Most of these skills are preschool skills anyway and not anythign I would generally expect 2 yos to know w/ any consistency. Maybe a 3 yo and definitely a 4 yo.
Nope. DD can tell you the name of every single Disney Princess, all the Mickey Mouse characters (Minnie, Daisy, Goofy, etc.) and just about every Sesame Street character, even though she doesn't watch TV. She picked all these up from books and play dates and school. However, she trails off on the ABC song somewhere after G or H (she keeps humming, but doesn't say the actual letters after that until the X, Y, Z at the end). She can count to about 7 in both Spanish and English, but won't go beyond that and the only colors she consistently says are blue/azul, black, red/rojo and sometimes green/verde. She can tell the difference between colors if I ask her, for example, if she wants the yellow one or the purple one, but she won't actually point at something and say it's yellow. And most of the time she says something is blue, even if it's not.
DD is 2 years, 7 months. I am not worried at all since her ability to rattle off names, places and other important details about people and the world around her clearly show that she's interested in the world and can remember things very well. I think in her world, the ABCs are just too abstract to spend a lot of time focusing on them and I have to agree with her, given the other skills she needs to use every day. I honestly don't see why people stress about things like this (and sorry if I seem to be going on a diatribe, I've been touring pre-schools lately and the whole process is driving me nuts). Letters, colors and numbers are such a small part of what a 2-year-old is exposed to every day and yet everyone seems to want to make sure their kids can rattle these off. Personally, I'm much more impressed that my daughter can tell people things like "pigs are cooked outside in Cuba" (we went to a pig roast while there) or rattle off the relationships of different people in the family to each other (saying her great-grandmother is grandma's mommy and her aunt is mommy's sister, but that she-DD- doesn't have any sisters, etc.).

Our Angel Boy- m/c in 2007 @ 9wks due to Trisomy 17
DD just turned 2 in october, she knows all of the letters and the sounds they make, she can recognize numbers 1-10 but can't really "count" things. She knows basic shapes and colors
Let me start by saying my daughter was barely talking on her 2nd birthday, so she definitely did not know any of these things. However, she is 29 months old now and knows the following:
ABCs: She can sing the alphabet in both English and Spanish. She recognizes all upper and lower case letters, and she knows the sounds of most of the letters. She is now pointing out letters on books, TVs, signs and pictures when she sees them. What we plan to work on over the next few months is spelling her name.
Numbers: She can count up to 20 before jumping back to the number 7.She recognizes the number 0-9, and she can count backwards from 5 (5-4-3-2-1). At this point, she is actually counting items, although she can have 5 and tell me it?s 13.
Shapes: Other than a circle and a square, she has no interest in learning her shapes.I have been working on this though.
Colors: She recognizes all of the primary colors.Everything else is green.
BTW: She is not in daycare or pre-school.My MIL watches her during the day.We teach her these things ourselves when we get home from work.
ABCs - Yes, DS recognizes all the letters and will say them all except W. He doesn't sing the ABC song though, and can't recite the alphabet.
Numbers - He can count to three and knows certain numbers by sight. We read tons of counting books, but for some reason he hasn't picked up his numbers very well.
Colors - Yes, DS knows all the colors of the rainbow, as well as pink, brown, white, black, and grey/silver.
Shapes - Yes, DS recognizes circles, squares, triangles, stars, Xs, and diamonds. He can also say all except triangle.

Thank you! S is 27 months and can only say "ABCD" and he'll say 2 if you say 1. Every color is green or yellow and he can't say any shapes - but he can identify them in his shapes puzzle when I name them. He's just started with 3 and 4 word sentences and concepts like hot, cold, spicy. I'm not worried b/c he's really bright with so many other things, mostly concepts and receptive language. His memory is excellent too.

DD turned 3 in November. She's known the ABCs and numbers since right after her second birthday. We got the bath foam letters/numbers and for fun went over them in the bath. Eventually those and her V-tech Little Einstien's computer got her to recognize them in both upper and lower case. She can sing the ABCs and can count to twenty in both English and Spanish (Spanish thanks to Handy Manny computer we have) We taught her colors by flash cards and shapes by the computers she has and some toys. DH and I work opposit shifts so one of us are always home with the kids so we're always trying to teach her little things. She's smart in so manyt things, but actually getting her to potty train ugh... she wont have anything to do with that lol

My DS will be 3 years old in March and is just starting to talk in full sentences. He doesn't know his ABCs, doesn't count (well, he can count to 2) and is just starting to recognize colors. I am not worried at all. He'll learn it when he's ready.
Multiple people commented on "not being worried" when they described their TWO YEAR OLD child's lack of knowledge of letters, numbers, colors, and shapes.
I am bummed people had to say that. Of COURSE you shouldn't be worried if your child can't rattle off these things. And as you read the responses, the inconsistency in how these concepts are defined by parents is remarkable.

Shapes - knows them all

She can count to 10 - which has happened in the last few days.
She knows heart, star, square, circle, triangle, rectangle
Colors - she knows what colors are - but most things are blue or pink.
She thinks all letters are letter "E" (her first initial)
