s/o PLing: where do I go from here?

Can anyone give me some tips here...

We're fully pee trained. T will run and go potty by himself and wakes up dry from naps and night time.  He's actually going to bed tonight for the first time without a diaper. (EEKK!)  I'm thrilled! We'll never use another diaper on him if he continues this!!  BUT... He still won't poo in the potty. For a while he was holding it in and getting constipated. About a week ago, we ended up having to give him stool softener and then a laxative.  He cleared himself out and then started to hold it in again. He pooed in his undies Saturday and Sunday night and just asked for us to change him.

Where do we go from here?  What's the next step to get him to poop in the potty??

  • I'll ask my dad and see what they did with my sister, I know she did the same.

  • Will he poop in a diaper?  If so I'd just give him one to poop in.  I know it' not ideal and we haven't been there so my advice is second hand but I have friends whose kids did the same thing and they all said that the more you push the worse it gets.  He'll reach a point where he wants to poop on the potty quicker if you don't give him a reason to have to be stubborn about it.  Good luck!

  • Two ideas for you:

#1 VERY slowly transition which I've heard of working for some.  Let him have the diaper to poop in, have him poop in the diaper in the bathroom, have him poop in the diaper on the potty in the bathroom, slight unsnap the diaper while pooping on the potty in the bathroom, lay the diaper on the potty so he can sit on it and poop....you get the idea.

#2 Big rewards for pooping on the potty.  We did a chart with Eli because he had the same problem but he was older so for your DS I would actually use a big visual toy.  If you poop on the potty, you can have this big dinosaur (or whatever).  After a big reward or two you can wean him off of them.

  • Thanks for the ideas.  We do little glow in the dark dinosaurs right now for poops. He gets 2 m&ms and a dino for poops actually. 1 M&M for pee--- but he's phasing that out himself (forgets to let me know he's peeing and I don't remind) :)
We've suggested to him to poop on the potty with his diaper on, or undies... he usually won't do it.

I'll keep trying. I'm super excited about his pees.  Would it be bad if I gave him $ for poops?  haha... he loves putting coins in his piggy banks.

  • DD knew she got a sucker if she pooped on the potty so she was potty trained before potty trained!  Don't know if a reward will work but it worked for us.
