Being around a nebulizer?

I was at my sister-in-law's today. Her little 1 year old daughter has breathing problems & has to have breathing treatments.. it's a nebulizer with a mask that's held up to her face and it puts out asthma medicine into the air. I was in the room when it was on, and it didn't have a smell or anything.. I was just wondering if I should be worried to be around that, like if it'd harm my baby, possibly breathing in the medicine?

Re: Being around a nebulizer?

  • What she is on is probably a nebulizer not a vaporizer and she is most likely on some kind of steroid that helps open up her airways, I am sure you will be fine. My son has to use one on occasion and the doctor has never warned me about being around it

  • Thanks for correcting that, sorry I wasn't sure what it was called :)

  • Every time I have used a nebulizer the medication used has been albuterol.  Many pregnant women with asthma take albuterol and I am sure you couldn't have possibly have gotten a very high dose if any just by being in the same room as a child using a nebulizer.  I'm sure you'll be fine.
  • I'm a respiratory therapist and give nebs for 12 hour shifts at work all the time! Probably like 30 or more a day! Most likely she is just on a bronchodilator or a steroid. The only thing I am not allowed to nebulize at work is Tobramycin, which is an antibiotic. Most likely she is not on that, she would be very ill. That can cause brith defects in 1st tri. Trust me your fine!! :)
  • Oh, and asthmatic pregnant women use inhalers and nebs all the time! Steroids and bronchodilators! HTH
  • You and the baby will be fine. DD is on a nebulizer and neither the pedi nor the midwife have ever said anything about it. If you were just standing in the room you definitely weren't even breathing much in.

  • a nebulizer uses just saline solution. DS has one. They are perfectly fine.

  • I take albuterol which is usually used with nebulizers and had a nebulizer treatment last month due to an extreme asthma attack. My doctor told me it was perfectly fine to take the meds. I wouldn't worry about being in the same room as someone who is getting one.

  • DD takes albuterol through a nebulizer and I was never told I couldn't be in the room with her.  In fact, I am the one that gives it to her.  I am sure you are fine.
