Can your 4 year old keep a secret?

Or more specifically, do they run and tell something as soon as they can if you specifically tell them NOT to? I swear telling the boys to not say something is like inviting them to tell someone as soon as possible.

Even yesterday at a birthday party, they ran up to the birthday girl and told her what present they got her the second we walked into the door. Kids.

  • DD is great at secrets and surprises. So great, that I might be in trouble with her when she's older.

  • If I want him to tell someone something, all I have to say is "don't tell!!" and he runs right off to tell.  LOL

    He sucks at secrets.

  • I am very surprised to say that he can keep a secret. He worked for weeks on a project at school to give to us on Christmas and he won't tell us what it is. He even teases me and tells me he made something, but says " sorry, you have have to wait to see what it is. Too bad!". Maybe I should be worried for later too?

  • Neither of my girls can keep secrets well.  DD#1 is starting to learn to, but not well.  She did tell me she was making me a "super secret surprise" at school for Christmas.  She accidentally let slip it was a plate and was so upset that I had to pretend I didn't hear her.  Up until this year, though, she'd go running in and tell DH the minute we bought his gift what it was and everything.  She's just excited.  DD#2 cannot keep a surprise at all ever.  She's still little.
  • Both of my kids can keep a secret.  They have never ruined a surprise.  They will say "I know what you are getting but I can't tell you."

  • I LOVE your profile picture!!! Or whatever you call it on here!! Siggy I guess.
  • Most of the time, yes.  But at dinner on Sunday, DS asked really loudly, "Mommy, can I just tell Daddy one thing about the snowblower we bought him for Christmas?"  Surprise

DH acted like he didn't hear, and it turned out Alex just wanted to tell him we bought him something at Sears, which would have been fine if he hadn't already announced what it was!
