XP: Pulling on Ears

No fever.  I'm pretty certain DS is cutting his bottom 1st molars as his fingers are constantly in his mouth.

That is common, right? Pulling on his ears?  Or could DS have an ear infection w/o a fever?

(I also posted this on Toddlers 12-24.)

Re: XP: Pulling on Ears

  • Yes, an ear infection without a fever is totally possible.  Mine don't tend to run fevers often so this happened a lot.  I tended to watch for other signs like fussy when laying him down for a diaper change (for teething that wouldn't make a difference but hurts like heck for an EI), refusing to drink a bottle (again, can hurt for an ear infection), etc.

  • It's also very common for teething, according my baby owners manual.

  • My boys pull on their ears when teething.  It's when they don't nap/sleep well or refuse to eat & pull on their ears with or without a fever that I have thought ear infection.  Hopefully it is nothing!

  • My older DD had ear infections without fever. I would lean toward the ear pulling being part of teething. They can pull at their ears when their throat hurts so the molars are close.  GL!

This is nice to know because T pulls his ears all the time and he has no ear infection...didn't know it.

  • Anything is possible. Call your pedi and describe the situation.

  • My pedi said ear pulling is also very common with teething - no ear infection - since the same "area" hurts.  Ellie constantly pulls and pokes at her ears and whenever we check, no infection.  OK, except the one, but in general she's just a poker, and it is worse when she's teething.  So that probably just muddies the waters even more, eh?
